How am I going to manage this?

I have a 17 month old DS. He is really prone to getting a temperature with any sniffle, and when at nursery would have a high temperature at least every few weeks. He also has a cough half the time.

He has just gone back to nursery and, predictably, now has a cold. Although he didn't feel too hot I took his temperature last night and it was 38. So now we're in isolation for two weeks. There is no way I'll be able to swab his throat for the NHS test, he won't even let me brush his teeth, so that's not an option.

I'm a single parent in a flat with no outdoor space. It's going to be very very shit. And if he follows his usual pattern and we follow all the rules, we'll be unable to leave the flat for approximately half the time, during which time I won't be able to work (I work from home but he is not able to play independently for longer than a few minutes).

I don't know how I'm going to manage. I'm sure others must be in the same boat, does anyone have any ideas on how to mitigate this? Is there some way to get a professional to swab him?? Could I just do the nasal swab or will that not work? There must be something I can do! He's up screaming half the night at the moment and my brain is addled from lack of sleep, I can't think.

Fingers crossed the saliva test works

I didn't know there was one, is it something that's going to be available soon do you know?

Googled it, doesn't look like something that will be available anytime soon Sad

Not that its going to help much, but DS is only in isolation for 1 week. Its "just" you isolated for 2, unless you get symptons too - then your 7 days start.
Can someone take him to nursery after the first week?

You can swab up his nose too

Mehblehfeh · 18/07/2020 12:06

That's a idea RedCatBlueCat thank you, his dad is about and is great but has to work too, he's been out of work since lockdown. But I could probably find someone.

They are trialling it in Southampton now ...it won't help this time but maybes next

Mehblehfeh · 18/07/2020 12:08

StopMaking I thought I had to do nose AND throat? If I could just do his nose that should be possible!

feetfreckles getting him to spit would probably be tricky, but he does dribble a lot when eating biscuits, perhaps I could catch in the tube if the test isn't compromised by biscuit contaminant Smile

I'm worried for him (as well as my own sanity), he is so bored and unstimulated in the flat and getting little exercise. He bought me his little shoes this morning as he wanted to go out. Sad. Obviously it's doable as a one off but if this is a regular thing...

He will also miss seeing his dad (and his dad will really miss him).
