We're going in a few weeks - I haven't been for years but other friends who have been more recently have loved it. Lots for kids, also, important at the moment, a lot one can do outdoors and distanced! We've booked a little chalet on airbnb and it was really quite cheap.

StealthPolarBear · 17/07/2020 21:44

Yes and if you have English heritage membership it's excellent. Carisbrooke Castle was brilliant

H1978 · 17/07/2020 21:45

@Echobelly thanks for this, I think we will be staying in a caravan park. I’ve looked at some visitor websites and it looks gorgeous. A long trek for us from Yorkshire so hoping it’s worth it.

@StealthPolarBear we do t have that but I’ll add the castle to my list of places to visit. We love going on walks as a family at nature reserves and other picturesque places.

We joined while there and I think it almost paid for itself. The castle, the needles, Osborne House.

AlphaDalpha · 17/07/2020 21:51

Steve Wright or Matthew Wright? 🤣

Brusselsprouts21 · 17/07/2020 21:54

I used to live there and its just beautiful. So much to do and definitely worth a visit. Not sure how much is open but you have Sandown pier which is great, Godshill is just stunning and worth a visit. You have a butterfly farm and loads of beautiful beaches. One place i would say you have to go is a restaurant in Arreton called the fighting cocks. The desserts are heaven.

Floods123 · 17/07/2020 21:54

Here for five days now. Love it here but back to Devon tomorrow. Lots still closed but all should be open next week. Local food fantastic in pubs. Carrisbrooke Castle great. Compton beach lovely. Model village a must. Most attractions need to book online prior to Vaseline Mottistone Manor

Floods123 · 17/07/2020 21:55

Prior to VISIT. Whoever invented predictive text should be shot!

Have you decided where you are staying yet? Look at the caravan park near st Helens or the one at Whitecliffe bay, noth lovely locations.

Nice walk from Yarmouth to Freshwater along an old railway line, Tenneyson down walk is great as is Culver Down. Another nice walk is Headon Warren near the Needles.

Steephill Cove is gorgous, Yaverland Beach (walk along to the cliffs end away from other people) Compton, Totland Bay are all lovely beaches if you prefer something less touristy, Ryde (Appley) beach is good for families although more typical touristy.

I love it there, my sister used to live there years ago, always trying to pursuade her to go back.

Def worth the trip!

Boredof2020 · 17/07/2020 21:59

I do love iow and going in August, got a great deal at a premier inn

Echobelly · 17/07/2020 22:01

We're staying in Freshwater - plan to do walking, see Needles - since I mentioned there was a donkey sanctuary the kids are obssessed with going there! Grin

SunInTheSkyYouKnowHowIFeel · 17/07/2020 22:02

English Heritage and Wightlink both can get through clubcard

bigbluebus · 17/07/2020 22:05

We had about 3 holidays there when DS was small. Loads to do - spent lots of time fossil hunting as DS was very much into dinosaurs. Loved Robin Hill Country park. Shanklin Chine was very pretty. Great beaches. We took bikes and did quite a lot of cycling too.

joyjester · 17/07/2020 22:06

It's lovely! Ventnor and steep hill cove are my favs

MynameisHappind · 17/07/2020 22:07

Wright or wrong?

It's lovely there, go for it.

ItsNotAGameOfSubbuteoMatthew · 17/07/2020 22:10

Osbourne House
Carisbrooke Castle
Tapnells Farm Park (and lunch in cow restaurant)
Appley Beach
Yarmouth Castle
Alum Bay, Needles and Battery

Twizbe · 17/07/2020 22:11

So worth it. I went a few years ago and there is so much to do with kids. Great place to go on holiday

ItsNotAGameOfSubbuteoMatthew · 17/07/2020 22:11

Robin Hill and Blackgang Chine double ticket.

GervaseFen · 17/07/2020 22:19

At the moment, the journey would put me off as you have to take ferry/cat/hovercraft. Otherwise, its great fun for a few days.

H1978 · 17/07/2020 22:29

Wow thank you for all the recommendations guys, sounds well worth the trip. Not sure where we are staying, I’ll leave that to dh, but I like to plan the days so he can concentrate on the driving Grin

Highly recommend. Almost as good as the isle of wight

CherryPavlova · 17/07/2020 23:28

We’re going over next week, we have a cottage. Our daughter is there at the moment.
Apparently, the sea is nice and warm now.
There is lots to do and excellent restaurants. Some areas are much nicer than others but that would entirely depend on what you liked and what you wanted from a holiday.
Stunning walking particularly on the coast around Freshwater and over the Downs.
Plenty for children.
Everything from fine dining to sports bars and burgers.
Good sailing. Good cycling. Beautiful beaches.
A few tacky spots and limp tourist attractions; definitely some places best avoided. But they are the minority.

twilightcafe · 26/07/2020 20:23

Word of warning about Ventnor: It's REALLY steep.
As in, your calves ache on the way down to the beach, never mind on the way back to your holiday accommodation.

CherryPavlova · 26/07/2020 21:27

There is indeed a bit of a hill from the town to the beach on Ventnor, it’s true. Many elderly people, people with pushchairs and tiny children manage it just fine.
Lovely walk along the coast path from Ventnor to Steephill Cove,
