I can't get used to tea without sugar

CannibalPanda · 17/07/2020 18:51

Granted it's only been about 5 days but I only had half a teaspoon before, so really thought I would start to adjust by now. I'm not, it's miserable Sad

I've bought some naice loose leaf tea which helps a bit, but I'm wondering what the point is and whether I should just bin off tea altogether or persevere.

For those who gave up sugar in tea, did you adjust, and how long did it take you? Any tips?

I drank tea with sugar for years, gave up, lost loads of weight to the point where I was desperate for calories, started again, several more years and gave it up again.

It takes weeks but you get there. Definitely need plenty of milk though.

CatBatCat · 17/07/2020 19:47

Try flavoured tea. Earl Grey or Lapsang maybe.

Twinings have a dark caramel flavoured tea which is quite sweet without the sugar.

TinkersRucksack · 17/07/2020 19:49

Power through. I gave up sugar in tea after a friends mum (who fed me regularly) got rid of her sugar bowl, so I forced myself to get used to it.

That was nearly 40 years ago, can't stand sugar in tea now

I just don't like it without so switched to herbal tea. I can't have sweeteners

Aposterhasnoname · 17/07/2020 20:17

Agree with persevere. I had two spoons for 40+ years and was literally gagging without. But I forced it down and now I gag if my teas been stirred with a spoon that’s stirred sweetened tea.

Supermarketworker06 · 17/07/2020 20:34

I used to have 3, went down gradually to 1/2, then went cold turkey with none. It took 2 weeks I think, can't drink it with sugar now.

HelpMeh · 17/07/2020 20:36

I cannot stand tea with any amount of sugar in it - it's far superior without. Persevere and you shall see Grin

nocoolnamesleft · 17/07/2020 20:44

Stick with it. In the course of 2 years I managed to go from 3 (or more) sugars in tea, to none. You'll get there.

I've waffled back and forth between sugar and no sugar for years but I've never been able to quit entirely.
I love sugar in my first cup, but I've started taking the first one without, then alternating so every other cup has sugar. It's working better than anything has in the past. I enjoy a hot (sugarless) tea first thing, then the sweetened tea tastes sweeter so I'm able to use less sugar in it, then I often don't see the point in sugar in subsequent cups.
It's also helping me reduce my tea intake. I just don't find sugarless tea as compelling as sugared so I'm down to two or three cups a day now, only one of them slightly sugared. LIke weareyoung I bloody love sugar in tea and could drink a dozen cups a day if I didn't take control.

I never could, then went vegan. Found lots of non dairy milks that I disliked even with sugar. Then found Oatly Barista, can happily drink sugar free tea when made with that! And after 40...cough....something years no longer take sugar in my tea.

CannibalPanda · 18/07/2020 14:11

Thank you all! Really appreciated. I am working my way through the suggestions. Just tried Oatly Original as DH had it in the cupboard - tasted OK on its own but definitely not for me in tea. Will try Oatly Barista though. Had an Earl Grey made with the tea leaves from the posh shop and it was pretty nice.

I gave it up on my honeymoon as I decided now I was married I was grown up & grown ups didn’t need sugar in their drinks.

I married at 32 🤨.

JoyFreeCake · 18/07/2020 14:53

Why are people aspiring to savoury tea? :-/

Coffee1990 · 18/07/2020 14:55

I enjoy two teaspoons of sugar in my tea and in my coffee. If it’s under or over slightly I cannot drink it. It used to be 1 and a bit and then it suddenly crept up to two. Id rather have a tea with no sugar than a tea with just 1. To me it doesn’t taste right. I never used to have sugar in my tea... just one day randomly started. Im hopeless as cutting down on sugar and snacks so I will watch this thread for ideas 🤣

CannibalPanda · 20/07/2020 10:04

Just to update, for anyone in a similar predicament in future.

7 days in and something has switched. I am now enjoying the savoury tea Grin Thank you for encouraging me to persevere! I think it was around 16 cups for me to adjust?

My "sweet" tastebuds seem to have reset in general. I previously couldn't have porridge without golden syrup / sugar / honey, but I just had a bowl with just banana and cinnamon and it tasted gorgeous.

What made all the difference for me was changing the tea I drank as well as the way I drank it.

I used to drink classic British style black tea (Yorkshire, Tetley, etc) with milk and one sugar. I really struggled to just drop the sugar from that. But I started drinking more Earl Grey with a tiny drop of milk, and then just black. Weak to begin with, but a little stronger before too long. With the extra fragrance of Early Grey I just didn't fancy the sugar.

Also Red Bush (not tea, but tea) is fantastic just black. Evan Lapsang and other more exotic teas.

Makes life so much easier too. Just a mug, a tea bag, some hot water, done.

Allmyeye · 20/07/2020 10:46

I thought I couldn't. Then after not having sugar in my tea and coffee for a while someone accidently gave me a drink with sugar in. It was vile.
Similar thing happened too my friend who thought she couldn't get used to not having sugar. It look her longer than me though.

MarkRuffaloCrumble · 20/07/2020 10:52

I gave up having sugar in my tea by drinking it alongside a Snickers.

To be fair, I can now drink it without sugar OR a Snickers, but coffee still has to have a sugar in it - although I’ve recently discovered sugar free salted caramel syrup which has been a game changer - I usually hate sweeteners but that stuff is goooood!
