Something is going on with my brain and I'm a bit worried

Let me start by saying I am going to try to see a GP next week. I've been putting it off in the hope I'd just feel better and am a bit scared of going to a GP office at the moment due to a disability that makes me vulnerable to Covid.

Two weeks ago I was sat on the couch reading on my phone when suddenly the room went spinny and I felt like my brain had been electrocuted and my ears started ringing. The zap feeling only lasted about twenty seconds but I haven't been right since. The ringing in my ears hasn't stopped and I'm having periods of pain in my eyes and dizziness to the point where I just have to lie in bed. I also occasionally get a weird pins and needles feeling across my scalp. Not painful exactly but very odd.

Obviously I googled it like an idiot and I've terrified myself into believing I have a brain tumor. It's so unlike any illness I've ever had before.

I'm under huge amounts of stress but I'm not sure that could result in such severe physical symptoms.

Any ideas on what this could be that aren't terrifying? Could really use some reassurance.

Well this morning I feel completely horrendous. I'm not prone to head aches but woke up with the worst one of my life after not being able to sleep because my heart rate wouldn't slow down.
I'm having lots of floaters in my vision too and this headache is the worst one I've ever had. Quite genuinely worried now Sad.

Have you been to the doctor's? Ring 111 and you should get referred to the out of hours service or they may even tell you to go to A&E. This isn't something you should put up with as you're clearly unwell and posting here isn't going to fix it for you.

Abitouting · 19/07/2020 09:31

I agree with PP. Try and be seen today if you can. Don't sit there suffering OP.

I know I'm being silly but I desperately don't want to go to a&e. I have a condition that makes me prone to blood clots and would not like to take my chances with Covid Sad. I doubt there is much they could do anyway on a Sunday and would likely just bounce me back to the GP?

Op I have had a "problem" that has lasted a few weeks, reluctant to go to Dr's but nagged by DH so much I phoned the surgery on Tuesday, After speaking to the receptionist (at length) the GP phoned me back and on Friday I was in my local Hospital being examined!
I was impressed by everyone who dealt with me and the "covid precautions" taken by the hospital I felt very comfortable and confident there that I was not subject to any risk.
Do get in touch with your GP they will allay your fears I'm sure and if they think you need referring to a specialist will do it PDQ

I was in hospital twice this last week. They are taking serious precautions against Covid. I would ring them and go.

Beebityboo · 19/07/2020 10:51

At the moment it doesn't feel like an emergency worth a hospital visit (currently just a really painful headache and dizziness) but I will definitely call the GP first thing tomorrow. The anxiety about it being a tumor is no doubt making the symptoms worse.

@Beebityboo

I am suffering really badly with depression and anxiety right now but have in the past too, with little in the way of physical symptoms. But then I've never gone through a pandemic before!
You haven't started taking sertraline recently have you?
Beebityboo · 19/07/2020 10:57

No but have taken it in the past (start to middle of last year) and it oddly does feel similar to how I felt when I came off of them.

OP, I have had the most awful year with these symptoms and finally received a diagnosis - it is completely harmless. Look up SCCD ear canal disorder.
It is pretty rare and often confused for Menieres or dismissed as mental health related. I too was having anxiety attacks thinking I had a brain tumor and I put off seeing a specialist for a year because I was so frightened.
Look it up. It is very annoying to live with and does make you feel sick, but after finding out it is harmless and nothing sinister it was like a huge weight was lifted and I was able to live again instead of constantly worrying. And then the pandemic hit so I transferred my worry to that.

Alexindiamondarmour · 19/07/2020 11:05

I should add that I’ve had symptoms of tinnitus and pressure in my head for over ten years which were attributed to stress and anxiety. It was only when I had a vestibular migraine - a vertigo attack - that it forced me to start worrying and then see the neurologist. I had a CT scan and they could see the piece of bone that was missing from my inner ear canal and the diagnosis was confirmed.

ProfessorMiaow · 19/07/2020 11:17

Do you have any vials of B12? Maybe order them on your repeat prescription. Could you order some syringes off the internet and give yourself the B12 injection? Just watch some Youtube videos to learn how to do it. This is what I have had to do since my GP is also refusing to give them. I have done mine twice now, 6 weeks apart, I am going to do them more regularly now

Wolfgirrl · 19/07/2020 11:21

It sounds ear related to me, especially with the dizziness etc. I burst my eardrum a while back and had all sort of weird sensations in my head. Could it be possible you have something stuck in your ear?

I also banged my elbow the other day which resulted in a near blackout. The room was spinning and I felt so dizzy, everything went black and I had stars in my eyes. I looked it up and apparently if you hit a nerve in the right place, your body drains all the blood from your head in response.

Basically the body is weird and wonderful, please try not to worry, there are probably a million things it could be.

RedOasis · 19/07/2020 11:25

Have you heard of labarynthitis? Could be that. Could be inner ear infection - this can cause the inner ear semi circular canal fluid to be off balanced , so I wouldn’t rule out ear infection op. Go to a and e. Worst thing is they tell you to go home and contact gp....

RomeoLikedCapuletGirls · 19/07/2020 11:33

Two possibilities just from my personal experience:

labyrinthitis. Absolutely awful but does go away after a couple of weeks.

Infection induced tinnitus: also awful but tends to get better.

Also about the B12. Have some lambs liver which is full of B12. Sounds awful but fried in a covering of flour with onion is delicious.

Mummyof2dc · 22/07/2020 17:39

Iv have very similar symptoms to you recently . Started with bad dizziness a lot of anxiety stress symptoms and really odd sensation of feeling pins and needles in my scalp not painful but not a nice feeling 🤢 Took at least 2 weeks for the dizziness to settle but it did go away eventually. Iv spoke to about 4 different doctors over the phone who don’t seem concerned and just think it’s either migraine related or because I went cold turkey on Amitriptyline. Heard similar to labyrinthtis so maybe it was that...
I do still get the pins and needles Now and then especially if I think about it I’m hoping it subsides soon it an odd sensation so I feel for you.

EducatingArti · 22/07/2020 17:44

You need your B12 injection. It is really important and could well be causing your symptoms.

Girly74 · 09/03/2025 18:39

Hi beebityboo
did you ever get to the bottom of your symptoms exactly the same thing happened to me last week and it’s left me with the ringing in the eyes and feeling like I can’t connect with the world 🥹
