Driving in Greece!

Would you do it? Have you? Thinking of a break in Kefalonia in September but hotel I've found says car needed really....

We did it... the roads around some of the hills can be pretty scary if you're a nervous driver. They had an earthquake some years ago and the barriers hadn't been replaced when we were there. DH hates heights so had to keep his eyes firmly on the road. Actual levels of traffic are fine in and around the towns though.

Oh and if you're wondering if they seem to use their horns a lot, we asked about this. The woman from the hire company said they blow the horns for any reason "to say we've arrived, to say give me way, just for no reason at all!"

Amazing place to go, we love it and will definitely return one day.

I've driven in Kefalonia and it was fine. There is a tendency, especially on narrower roads or roads not in great condition, for people to drive down the middle of the road, but it's generally fine.

We've always driven in Greece , once in Kefalonia and a few times in Corfu . It's lovely to be able to drive around explore.I also like to have the option to walk to places too though. It's good to have a shop and a few restaurants within easy walking distance. I say easy because some places say there is a shop 500m away and then you get there and find it's an almost vertical 500m!

Some of the roads can be a bit hairy if you have a fear of heights - I'm really bad with heights but have always been fine apart from one time in Corfu when I had to get out and wait for my husband to turn the car around! We ended up getting a taxi boat to the place we were heading to instead. Didn't have a problem anywhere in Kefalonia.

A smaller car is a good idea as some roads can be quite narrow.

Don’t whatever you do acknowledge another driver by showing your palm. It’s very very rude in Greece.,
