Sensory toys for newborns

Hi everyone
I am currently 29 weeks pregnant with my first baby and wanted to get your ideas on baby sensory toys for young babies.
I have heard great things about disco lights and foil blankets for tummy time.
I have a fisher price play mat with lots of toys (coloured and black & white), music and crinkly bits.
I doubt there will be sensory classes so was hoping to do some at home. How old would you start them with sensory toys? Thanks for any suggestions.

Amazon sell a box called Proud Mama sensory box. It's brilliant and has all the bit u need as a starter pack.

I don't think you need to worry about looking for specific sensory things for awhile, the world itself is an amazing sensory experience! Sitting under a tree with the sun coming through the leaves, listening to music or nature sounds, shiny things in everyday life, when dd was a newborn she just loved staring at any and every light bulb!

Agree - save your money and space.

A play mat is enough and usual household items can also double up as sensory toys.

Have a watch of the baby club on CBeebies for some ideas

I agree it's a waste of money getting toys for tiny babies. Baby sensory is also a pile of balls.

Get some scarves, bangles, wooden spoon etc out once the baby is three or four months, before that they'll be happy just staring at the curtains in wonderment! Don't make it harder than it has to be Grin

Please don't fall into the trap of thinking you need lots of stuff for babies, as I found they often don't play with lots of the toys they have anyway.

A few ideas;
Rainmaker (noisy and visual)
Stacking cups (for co ordination)
A ball
A bubble machine (a great success)
Bath toys

Mine also enjoyed playing with everyday items (under supervision) like empty plastic bottles (they also make great bath toys), plastic kitchen spatula. Door keys also seem to be a big hit.

My children loved the black and white baby books.

Thank you for all of your great suggestions. I love looking through all of the DIY sensory ideas you can use from household items. I am trying not to get sucked in and spend lots on toys and baby things in general really. Oh I also have a lamaze firefly, my friend's son loved looking at that.

My LOs favourite toy at the moment is a bowl of water. He also likes his slinky and a set of plastic ikea stacking cups, all less than 99p.

Mine seemed to enjoy a lemon stolen from the fruit ball and the cardboard tube from the kitchen roll most.
