Sobbing into the (rocking) horse's mane :(

He's always been somewhere about the place since the girls were small & just lately, since he's actually probably only meant for a toddler, has been living just inside dd2's bedroom door being used to put clothes that are to go away on until they go away.

Yesterday, dd2 decided she'd like that little bit of bedroom space back, as well as a normal bed rather than cabin bed.

So this afternoon I've put his saddle back on & brushed his hair, and added him to my small pile of things to go in the loft until I find him a home. & now I feel quite sad.

None of the other toys going has bothered me :(

I have a large rocking horse. My dad made it when my first daughter was born. He bought a kit and had to carve it and paint it himself, so it's extra special to me as he died 3 years ago. However, my girls are 19 and 21 now and have no use for it so it resides in my bedroom (taking up valuable space) but I won't part with it.

Aw, OP, I get what you mean Flowers

It's absolutely right and good that our DC should grow older but it doesn't half hammer home the passage of time. I love the little people my DC are growing to be but a part of me will always pine for my chubby legged little babies who thought inward a rockstar simply for being "mum".

I’ve had my hand made rocking horse in the loft for 26 years as I can’t part with it as my late grandfather made it.

Why not keep these things, if we have the room Smile

I dread to think what’s in the lift come to mention it.....

Elieza · 14/07/2020 17:09

Loft not lift duh!

WorraLiberty · 14/07/2020 17:13

I'm assuming you're speaking metaphorically and not actually bending over the rocking horse, sobbing into its mane? Grin

It's funny how we can get emotionally attached to our kids things OP.

I remember being a bit upset when my youngest DS bagged up all his wrestling figures/wrestling ring and passed them on to his mate's little brother.

lucysmam · 14/07/2020 17:14

@Carandi he's not even special like that. He was reduced to £20 if I remember right & either a 1st or 2nd birthday gift for dd1 split between us & her nanna because we were all skint at the time.

Yours sounds like it should be on display. Mine's just a ratty, well used, toy with tangled up hair.

@KittyFantastico that's exactly it. I'd happily talk to him telling him to look after dd2's clothes until she put them away & all of a sudden she wants the space and a more 'grown up' bedroom (I secretly agree with her that she's ready for a bit more grown-up-ness) but goodness it feels like 2 minutes ago she was this tiny dot who didn't walk until 18mo & clung to me like we were velcroed.

Grin @WorraLiberty no, I didn't actually cry into it's hair! Just brushed it through before I offer him to my friend with a young enough to appreciate him son. & he may well stay in the loft a while if she doesn't want him

Ahhh I hope she wants him.

I still remember my dad bringing home a rocking horse that had been handed down from my cousins.

It was huge and made of tin (showing my age now Blush )

I reckon Neddy would be worth a bit of money now.

I’ve just reluctantly let my parents put my dc’s rocking horse in the loft next to my sisters.
Our rocking horses were made by my grandfather. I never received one as a child i had a massive custom built toy box instead (painted bright blue and covered in original Thomas the tank engine images). But both my younger cousin & sister did. So when i had my first dc amazingly my grandfather had the pieces left to build one final horse. It’s extra special as it’s the last one he ever built.
My dc are both still big enough to use it, we just don’t have the space right now so I’m reminding myself that it will come back out of the loft and be used again in the future.

Wolfiefan · 14/07/2020 17:28

He can stay! I have some bits I can’t stand to let go. Some I don’t mind and It makes me happy to think of them making another child happy. But those special bits? I’m saving them. Blush

I cried over my DCs plastic World Of Little People toys! No way am I getting rid of their rocking horse, he is a beautiful little wooden horse, carved and painted to look like a bay Arab, with real leather tack. I hope to see grandchildren playing on him one day.

lucysmam · 14/07/2020 22:30

Sooo; the horse is staying out of the loft after all. I went up after tea to pop him in the loft & found dd sat on my bed stroking him while she was reading so we put him back where he belonged in her bedroom :)

I still have a bag of Thomas trains, some of which have been played with so much they have very little paint left. All 4 of mine played with them. I refuse to part with them

Floralnomad · 15/07/2020 01:09

I would also keep him , we have kept a few ‘important’ toys in our loft and our youngest is 21 - amongst them are rocking zebra and Bob the push along dog .

Carandi · 15/07/2020 12:50

Aww OP, yours sounds just as special. The fact you scrimped to get it for your child, and it sounds very well loved, so just as special to your family in its own way. Glad to hear it is being left out of the loft.

VenusClapTrap · 15/07/2020 13:15

Aw, rocking horses are lovely. I was always desperate for one, but was never given one despite my pleas because they ‘take up too much space’. When my grandfather died I spent some of my inheritance on a beautiful 100 year old rocking horse as a memento - my grandfather was a couple of months shy of his hundredth birthday when he died.

Neither of my dc have ever been terribly interested in the rocking horse, sadly, but I still sit on him occasionally, and he has pride if place in my bay window, looking beautiful. He is dapple grey with a long flowing mane and jaunty red velvet under his leather saddle. I love him.

Musicalmistress · 15/07/2020 13:22

I was given my large rocking horse by my grandparents 40years ago. He’s a little sad looking these days as he has been much loved & played on by dozens of children including youngest DD13. DD doesn’t want/have space for him & there’s no space for him anywhere else in the house so he’s currently languishing in the garage. OH has gently suggested getting rid a few times but it’s not happening! If my DB had a bigger house I’d consider loaning him out for his DCs but they don’t have space either. 😕
