Can someone with a dual passport (british and an EU country) please tell me how it works

especially if british is your 2nd nationality

Do you have to apply differently for british naturalisation if you want to keep your original EU country (e.g. german) citizenship also, compared to if you were giving up your EU country citizenship to become a british citizen?

What happens when it's passport renewal time? Do you just renew each as you would normally when each expires?

I have 2 passports, Sweden and UK. I applied for Swedish citizenship when i met the requirement and ticked a box saying I was keeping my uk passport. I renew them both as normal, they dont 'interact with or effect' each other.

You just renew as normal. I don’t recall there is even a box to tick on whether you have another passport on the Italian or the UK application. My DD is dual from birth though, and dual nationality is allowed in Italy, we’ve not needed to apply specifically. I think some countries don’t allow it. Are you applying for German nationality?

Sorry, just re-read you’re applying fir British. I believe as dual nationality is allowed for uk passport holders that’s not an issue. It might be for Germany though, I believe their dual nationality only extends to other member states?

I have now dual nationality, German and British.

When we applied for naturalisation we obviously had to state that we are Germans and all the respective details.i don’t think that we had to state that we intended to keep our German nationality but we had to state the country we intend to live in permanently.

When we applied for our first British passport we had to send in our German ones as well, similar to DD who is British from birth, has to do when we renew hers.

When I renewed my German passport I had to bring my naturalisation certificate and a couple of other things showing that we applied and became naturalised while the UK was still an EU country, the time frame for obtaining the UK citizenship while keeping the German without problems is end of the year I think.

I know that normally Germany does not approve dual nationalities unless they are from birth and you have to apply to keep it so be quick.

I have dual nationality, my father and mother are from different w. European countries which allow dual nationality. As I was born with them I don't have to do anything in particular to keep them, I justbrenew my papers when necessary. I have passed both nationalities on to my children.

I don’t think Germany allow dual citizenship except for other EU countries. So I think not you’d have to apply before the end of the transition period but best check with German authorities on this

Thanks a lot everyone.
@reluctantbrit that makes sense - thank you. I had a few follow up questions to you as it seems you were in a very similar position to me. When you say you take your naturalisation certificate with you for renewing your German passport, do you mean your naturalisation certificate to become British, right? (The one that you get given at the citizenship ceremony in U.K.?)

  1. did they use the photo from your biometric appointment on your British passport or one you later take and submit when applying for first U.K. passport after getting citizenship?

  2. how long did you have to send away your German passport for before you received it back when applying for your first U.K. passport

Thanks a lot :)

  1. sorry, yes, the certificate you get at the citizenship ceremony. They scanned it in and you also have to fill in the relevant details in the renewal form. Based on what I heard at the embassy there were several people with the same scenario, they are quite used to it now and I found the details on the embassy's website detailed and thorough with what you have to bring.

  2. We took new photos for the passport as there were over 7/8 months between getting the biometric ones and when we applied for the passport.

  3. I had a nightmare as I arrived in the UK unmarried and now have all my papers in my marriage name so I had to re-submit documents. I think it took a bit over 2 weeks with the registered overnight mail each time.
My husband - with obviously no name change - had his documents back after 1 week.

We have both passports and German identidy cards so we still had one set of documents even with the passports sent away.
