Apple Watch - which model?

Considering getting an Apple Watch for DH and have just spent ages looking at the difference between series 3 and series 5 and trying to figure out whether it’s worth getting the more expensive one or not.

Also, whether it’s worth getting the cellular version - I can’t imagine he would go anywhere without his phone anyway but maybe if his phone worked without it he would? Is it actually that useful to have? Do you need separate cellular contract for it, or some kind of add on? I know you need to be with a provider who supports it, which he is.

Any tips or things to avoid?

I’ve got the non-cellular version and I can’t imagine needing the cellular version as I’ve always got my phone - actually I use it to check I’ve got my phone by glancing at my watch and seeing it’s connected!

I think the cellular one is for people who want to go on long runs and not have to carry their phone.

I have the 4, upgraded from the original and it's miles apart. I am also usually glued to my phone but the cellular on the watch has made such a difference. For example I work in schools and sometimes cannot have my phone with me. But one day my mother called me, and she never calls me. I was able to talk to her quickly on the watch (which school were fine with) and resolve the issue.

I get it with my Vodafone account and it costs me £20 per month including the cost of the watch. I'd absolutely recommend it, but only if you think it's something he'd use. Some people just aren't that into them, but if they are, it's fab.

I have series 5, the cellular one. Previous to this I had a 3 non cellular. The only time I've found the cellular to be useful is if I've been out and my phone dies, I still have it as a back up. Also I like to run/cycle so it means I can just go out with my watch and not take my phone.

DH had cellular on his Galaxy watch and didn't use it at all in the two years he had that model.

I have the series 3. Does what I need, which is show me endless messages from the kids without having to root through my handbag for my phone.

Thanks everyone - I can see the cellular being really useful for people who do a lot of sports or have a job where they can’t have their phone on them but neither apply to him so I suspect he wouldn’t need that.

i've recently got a series 3 which was pretty good value I think- about £200. It definitely stops me being quite as glued to my phone which is rarely far away. I really like it. I would say it needs charging every 2-3 days though which is a bit annoying but just get into the habit of doing it overnight next to my bed,

Frazzled2207 · 14/07/2020 11:11

btw I take my s3 out running and cycling and although I don't get notifications when out (thank goodness) it does a really good job of mapping out where I've been and how far etc.

H1978 · 14/07/2020 14:31

I have a series 3 non cellular but I only use for exercise and getting notifications so it’s pretty basic. It needs to be within a certain distance of the phone to receive calls and messages, but you can’t read the messages on the actual watch.

The series 4/5 enables the wearer to be able to read messages on the actual watch. Dh has the 4 cellular but he always needs to be on call so it’s better for him in case he is far from his phone. You’d need to weigh up what is needed from the watch and decide if you want to pay the higher price.

I have the 5, but not cellular. I like running without my phone (because I can then escape work/family/stuff) but otherwise have my phone with me all the time. I can't remember why I was persuaded to get the 5 - think it has better heart rate monitoring and the rest maybe. Or maybe I'm just shallow.

I use it for exercise the most.

Thanks all. Think I’ll get the 5 non-cellular version :) it’s our 10th wedding anniversary and I was hoping to find a really special gift but I can’t so I will throw money at it instead 😂

@H1978
Really? I have a s3 (non-cellular) and have no issue reading messages on the actual watch. It only struggles with attachments.

H1978 · 16/07/2020 12:51

@Frazzled2207 the messages come up but I have the smallest screen 38mm so it’s really small to read a full message, and yes I agree you can’t see attachments or WhatsApp videos 🥴

I was comparing to Dh’s 44mm series 4 which has a lot of information on the screen

Fuss · 16/07/2020 12:54

@H1978 I have the 38mm and have no issues reading messages. Have you tried increasing your font size?

Frazzled2207 · 16/07/2020 12:59

Good point Fuss- I have the smaller watch and again is no issue reading text
