Lego storage

I can’t believe I’m asking this, but I’ve been googling for days and can’t find what I’m looking for so thought I’d ask for recommendations.

DS wants to sort his Lego into colours for storage. It’s currently all chucked into an Ikea kallax box.

Ideally I’d like to keep it in the same space so about that size, but with individual compartments for the different colours.

Everything on line looks either too big or too small, with tiny drawers, or difficult to gauge the size.

I’m planning to go and have a mooch around Ikea today to see if anything jumps out at me, but I’d rather not go if I can just order something on line.

So, what do your dc use? Any creative ideas or links to products?

Thank you!

Ps I’ve looked on Pinterest and there are loads of great ideas, but it all looks a bit too big for ds’s collection.

Ds stores his in really useful boxes. He has a fre of the 9ltr ones, which have a tray which slots into the top for all the tiny bits and pieces. He recently decided that he wanted the rest sorted by colour so now has a number of IKEA zip top sandwich bags withing the boxes to keep the colours separated.

We bought the boxes and trays from hobbycraft, they are not the cheapest but pretty indestructible, stack well and happen to fit perfectly into his cupboard.

Keeping it all sorted means it inevitably takes up more space than all being in one big box, but he plays with it much more that way, and can because he can spread out several open boxes doesn't need to upend the whole lot on the floor.

Google Really Useful Drawers/Storage Units, I think that's what you're looking for.

We have a rainbow set for Arts and Crafts stuff, but could easily be used for Lego.

We used loads of Ikea Trofast when sorting by colour but now the collection has grown too big to sort be colour we have it sorted by type so changed the system to Really Useful boxes because they have lots of different sizes and they stack well.

By a pack of 10 plastic tubs from Poundland (the 'takeaway' style ones) as a start for sorting out. It will be either the novelty of sorting will wear off after a day and you will have only spent a quid or the sorting goes well and you can upgrade to a more solid box. The ones called 'Really Useful Boxes' are popular in the Lego community.

I looked at the really useful ones but the drawers looked either too big or too small. I think I’d have to see them in real life to get an idea of if they are what I’m looking for. He hasn’t got a massive collection yet but I’m sure it’ll grow.

I’m currently stood in a massive bloody queue to get into IKEA. I must be mad. (Going in for this one thing I’m sure I’ll come out with a trolly full of shit!)

Seychelles 98 you have to move to a bigger house and have a dedicated Lego Room. It's the Lego Law.

10brokengreenbottles · 14/07/2020 14:22

Oh Book don't say that. We have a playroom that is overrun with Lego, but DS1&3 and DH would love a dedicated Lego room. I imagine even then Lego would still take over the house.

We have too many really useful boxes. Within the boxes we use bags, various Tupperware and dividers to separate bricks. We also have a few Lego storage bricks and Lego storage heads.

Nosuchluck · 14/07/2020 15:28

Oh yes the collection will grow, my 21 year old DS's room looks like a Lego museum!

I got some plastic drawer storage from Hobby craft I think and sorted in to colours but it was really for my benefit rather than the DC... but then we found we needed another tray for figures , one for wheels , one for translucent, one for flat pieces.... it spawned a monster . Just warning you !

Eminybob · 15/07/2020 13:29

Thanks.
I ended up getting some plastic stacking boxes with compartments from Ikea, but I seriously underestimated how big his collection already is. I have just about fit in what was in the box, but anything which is currently made up or being played with hasn’t been included so I’ll have to get some more. And I don’t particularly want to repeat my IKEA experiment any time soon. Doh.

My ideal Lego solution would be to have a large ziplock bag for each complete set, with the instructions in too.
Everything else would go in a random large but shallow clear box so you can see the pieces fairly easily. I would love to sort by colour or type (and have done) but I know that my DC wouldn’t stick to that. So ours is just in the big shallow box for now.

Eminybob · 15/07/2020 14:08

I’ve kind of given up with the idea of separating by set because she never wants to rebuild the same set again and he plays with it all over the house so inevitably pieces go missing or separated from the set.

We have an under bed box with lots of different Tupperware tubs in. Admittedly we have separated by types of piece rather than colour.

We seem to need lots of space for half built models too.

@Seychelles98 DS2 has a lot of star wars lego. I put hooks in his bedroom ceiling and its suspended from these with fishing line. All the spaceships are at jaunty angles.

bashcrashfall · 15/07/2020 16:10

Don't buy the Lego storage made by Lego - absolute nightmare as it has holes in the bottom and the little pieces get stuck. Whoever designed those has clearly need played with Lego.

It’s so expensive as well! I looked at some of the cube storage, it was £20 + per cube!
