Recommend me some podcasts

I’ve started walking miles every day (lockdown cliche!) and I’m fed up of all the music on my phone. I don’t really want to pay for a music service. I live rurally and the mobile data signal is rubbish so I need to be able to download things on to my phone.

I was thinking about trying some podcasts but I don’t know what’s worth listening to. What do you all enjoy? Generally I like smart and funny but I’m open to all suggestions.

Here are some I like

Generation Y, murder mystery cases
My favourite murder, like gen y but funnier
Dear prudence, weekly advice column
The week unwrapped, weekly news column

JassyRadlett · 13/07/2020 08:50

Ooh. It really does depend on your interests. A lot of mine are news and history based with a side of The Good Place The Podcast and The West Wing Weekly.

Really love You’re Dead To Me (quite funny history podcast by Greg Jenner), Rule of Three (comedians/comedy writers talking about something funny they love - David Mitchell talking about the post-apocalypse game show sketch on That Mitchell and Webb Look back in March was brilliant), Alan Alda’s Clear + Vivid, and the Infinite Monkey Cage. And lots of BBC comedy.

JassyRadlett · 13/07/2020 08:51

Oh I didn’t know Dear Prudence had a podcast!

I've just discovered Julia Gillard (ex Australian PM) A Room of One's Own, where she talks to women about their achievements, lives, feminism etc, is interesting, informative and entertaining, I've listened to interviews with Hillary Clinton, Sandy Toksvig and Helena Morrissey (high flying businesswoman and mother of 9!) so far.

I also like a lot of the BBC crime serialisation, More or Less, Friday Night Comedy, the Unbelievable Truth, Scummy Mummies, Fortunately with Fi and Jane, Older and Wider (Jenny Eclair), Kitchen Cabinet and Out to Lunch with Jay Rayner, where he talks to celebrities, was over restaurant lunches, but during lockdown, he's carrying on but doing it remotely over nice takeaways.

I'm also a daily lockdown walker and that's when I listen to my podcasts - I used to listen to them in the car, but am hardly driving at all right now but I didn't think to listen during walking at first, but now I do.

PurpleDaisies · 13/07/2020 08:58

Ooh, these all sound fantastic!

The West Wing is my favourite ever TV show. I had no idea about the podcast. I love reading crime novels so I’ll definitely be trying those murder podcasts. People have recommended Infinite Monkey Cage in the past but I’d totally forgotten about it. Great to be reminded.

Thanks @BarbaraofSeville, lots of interesting ones there. I particularly like the sound of the Julia Gillard on.

I had exactly the same realisation about walking with podcasts late last night. I don’t now why it’s taken four months!

Seconding Rule of Three (for comedy nerds), Infinite Monkey Cage, More or Less.

Also enjoy Newscast (aka Brexitcast, Electioncast, Coronavirus Newscast), Kermode and Mayo’s film show and The Intelligence (three short international news pieces a day from the Economist).

And I’m rereading Game of Thrones/ASOIAF along with History Of Westeros.

WinterIsComingKnitFaster · 13/07/2020 09:11

And it doesn’t have to be podcasts of course. I’ve currently got Tristram Shandy, Emma and The Pallisers lined up on BBC Sounds (along with my slightly less highbrow diet of Agatha Christie dramatisations).

Shosha1 · 13/07/2020 09:16

Neil Olivers - Love letters to Britain. Really interesting ( and I could listen to his voice anytime)

Lauren Lyles - She's a Rec she talks to women from all walks of life, they recommend a movie a book and music. Found the one with the woman bomb disposal really interesting.

Dan Snow - History Hits.

PurpleDaisies · 13/07/2020 09:18

I watch the coronavirus newscast every Thursday, again I don’t know why I hadn’t thought of the podcasts.

This is going to keep me going for ages. Really appreciate all these suggestions.

If u like crime novels you will love the podcast Serial, I couldn’t stop listening to it, it draws u in.

PurpleDaisies · 13/07/2020 09:38

Thank you @Astella22, will definitely add that one to the A list.

I’m now thinking I might need a spreadsheet to keep track of (and rate!) all these recommendation, plus I’m going to have to walk for longer every day. Win win!

There are a plethora of podcast management apps on Android and iOS that will do that for you. They'll allow you to search and subscribe to podcasts and download new episodes automatically and delete ones you've heard. (Some will sync across devices too).

Curious Cases of Rutherford and Fry (BBC) are good.
and Richard Herrings LST podcast has some good guest (mainly comics) on. It was where Stephen Fry admitted he'd had serious problems ...

WarriorsComeOutToPlayay · 13/07/2020 12:08

I second Serial, the first series is absolutely gripping. Very different but I also really like Jay Raynor's Out To Lunch.

Mumofcats5 · 13/07/2020 12:19

I also recommend BBC Sounds for the wide variety of podcasts and music mixed on there.
I'm a sucker for Desert Island Discs and Fortunately I have to say!

OhioOhioOhio · 13/07/2020 12:21

Amy schumer has a good one.

BlueThursday · 13/07/2020 12:43

I enjoy 'newscast' (brexitcast) and currently there is a daily one, which I find keeps me up to speed with the news.

Also Fearne Cotton's 'Happy Place'.

And 'Stuff You Should Know'.

Also 'The Guilty Feminist'.

Monkeytapper · 13/07/2020 17:48

Louise Theroux - Grounded

Whenwillow · 13/07/2020 17:50

Oh also Adam Buxton, and Bryony Gordon. I get mine on Spotify, which offers up suggestions of what else I might like, which is useful.
And there is quite a variety of BBC ones, such as Woman's Hour and Desert Island Discs, and lots more.
I have become a lover of podcasts!!

LajesticVantrashell · 13/07/2020 19:00

Red handed - like my favourite murder but British
Soundtracking with Edith Bowman. She talks to directors and film makers about the music used in their films. The Danny Boyle one was fab.
Blood on the Tracks - Colin Murray. He talks to four famous people about their favourite music tracks

MrsJackRackham · 13/07/2020 20:21

Stuff You Missed In History Class, really well researched with interesting subjects.
You Must Remember This, old Hollywood stories.
A History if England, I think he's up to Elizabeth I. Just a guy in his shed but meticulously researched. I love his delivery and sense of humour.
Fortunately, burst out laughing funny sometimes.
