What sofa fabrics are least likely to trap smells? Dog owner asking

Apologies, I posted this in the doghouse but re-posting here for traffic as we need to choose in the next 24 hours.

We are having to choose a new sofa fabric (we’re not going for leather based on too cold in winter, hot in summer etc).

We cover our sofa with blankets and change and wash them, but I’m still keen to get a fabric that is pet friendly.

After much research on best sofa fabrics for pets, I was ready to go for 100% polyester.

However, have just read that when it comes to clothes, smelly microbes love polyester and have a party on it, which is why polyester gym clothes smell so much more than cotton (not that you’ll see me very often in the gym to verify this).

I would love a fabric that is less likely to trap doggy smells, so am now thinking a cotton / man-made mix might be better.

Our dog doesn’t scratch sofas, so am thinking maybe we don’t need the hardwearing polyester recommended for cat owners.

What would other dog owners recommend? Would cotton be a good idea or madness? Would something like chenille be a good choice or bad choice due to deeper pile? Am getting so confused.

(Also mentioned in other post that before anyone says the best type of sofa fabric is one that a dog is not allowed to sit on - it is far too late for that I’m afraid Blush.)

Do you have an exceptionally smelly dog? The fabric never arises my mind when buying our sofas recently, I actually don't know what they're made off, some kind of chenille type thing I think. Our sofas have never smelt.

@AriettyHomily No more smelly than any other dog actually. So that’s encouraging to hear!

With chenille would you have to vacuum it regularly?

I have a velvet sofas and they don’t seem to hold any smell. I do use throws for the dog and wash them regularly. I also don’t let my girl on the sofa when she is wet/muddy. Although she doesn’t always agree with this rule Grin

That's also encouraging to hear @doodleygirl. I do love the look and feel of velvet. Can I ask is it cotton velvet or those smart / clever velvets you see that claim to be more stain proof?

I can’t remember but I did pay extra to have a stain protector applied. Sofa’s are about 3 years old and so far no stains. We are a pretty clumsy family so I am pleased the protector has worked.

Sounds good @doodleygirl I wondered if velvets were off limits for dogs but maybe not!
