HELP maggots in bin

lil674 · 12/07/2020 10:47

Went outside to the black bin to find maggots everywhere, the bin is due to be emptied on Tuesday, what can be done? Will the bin men take the bin to be emptied or not?

I dont think so- once our bin men refused to take them with maggots once. I was mortified.
Get some boiling water and pour over everything- that will kill them instantly. When dead, put gloves on and just re- bag everything.
Life cycle of a fly is very short so these are probably from eggs laid only a couple of days ago. The key is making sure that flies cannot get access to the stuff in the bin so make sure you double bag everything and that there are no holes in the bags. Then it wont happen again. If there is nothing for them to feed off, they wont hang around.

They might be flies by then! Pour boiling water on them. Is there food waste in the bin? I get this sometimes in my brown food waste bin as it only gets collected every 2 weeks - I double bag food waste now

Leflic · 12/07/2020 11:58

Leave it somewhere quiet for the birds to eat them or they can turn into flies.I used to leave the lid open in the garden so they found be taken..Bin men ( are we allowed to be that sexist) always took mine but I normally only had a few.

Hose it off/ wash it down if your’re worried. They’re all gods creatures however disgusting.

Bagelsandbrie · 12/07/2020 12:00

Our bin men don’t bat an eyelid and still take the bins. We throw a load of boiling water with bleach in it over the bins if they’re really awful.

TimeWastingButFun · 12/07/2020 12:10

I wouldn't worry about them collecting, we have a food waste bin which we're not allowed to put bags in and if you put a chicken carcass in there just after collection it's full of maggots by the next collection, nothing we can do as we're following council instructions plus we clean it after every emptying and they always collect it. Tough job though 🤮. It's easier if this is your refuse and you can use bags though, so just double bag everything.

Wow- this seems a bit weird- wouldnt it attract rats etc? why would the council want insects to be breeding on waste food- sounds really unhygienic

dementedpixie · 12/07/2020 12:19

We use biodegradable food waste bags provided by the council, not plastic ones. As outlr food waste only gets collected every 2 weeks I end up double bagging them to try to prevent maggots. Doesn't always work though especially in the summer

LadyFlumpalot · 12/07/2020 12:26

Just flip the lid open for the birds or advertise on Facebook that you have maggots free for anyone who wants to do a spot of fishing if they come and get them.

TimeWastingButFun · 12/07/2020 12:28

Alexis the bin has a sort of lockable handle so rats and things can't get in bit flies can. It's gross but they changed the system a year ago (previously put food waste with garden waste) and they specifically said no bags in the food bin and no food waste in the garden waste or refuse.

@TimeWastingButFun

Aaaaah I see! How curious, we dont have that here. It sounds kind of revolting

I don't know about the Facebook solution but birds will clear an open bin in minutes.
TimeWastingButFun · 12/07/2020 12:35

Alexis it really is. Prefer the old system!! 🤮

dementedpixie · 12/07/2020 12:53

Do they not just mean no plastic bags? Surely degradable green food bags would be acceptable

Cruddles · 12/07/2020 13:05

Had this recently, boiling water around the top before collection. Then after collection more boiling water to clean bin and tipped it upside down to drain
