Hairdresser Annoyance

Can I ask what anyone thinks of this. So I was very excited to get my hair appointment and it was lovely to see my stylist and get the old mop cut! When I booked my appointment they mentioned some rules, understandably, that had been put in place. I turned up and before I walked through the door put on my mask and gloves, these items had been mentioned in the list of rules. But when I got in I was told that I couldn’t wear my own mask & gloves, I was handed a paper bag containing 1 disposable mask (which was actually way too big & kept falling down!). The cost of this was £5 added to the bill! I had gone in doing what I thought was the right & responsible thing, ie wearing mask AND gloves as mentioned in the rules, but was told instead to wear a too large mask & NO gloves, for the fee of £5! It didn’t seem to make any sense! And next time you go for an appointment you have to buy the same “PPE kit” again! I could understand if the kit included perhaps a washable mask & a pair or two of gloves, but 1 disposable mask that didn’t fit properly or stay on the face (particularly when the dryer was turned on, it nearly flew away altogether🤣)! I got more and more irritated in the hours afterwards I feel like like going somewhere else! IS IT ME?

Why would you not just say, no thanks I'm already wearing one? Then if they pushed the issue I'd have walked out.

BananaChocolateLump · 11/07/2020 23:36

Sorry misread that they told you you couldn't wear your own mask, did they give a reason??

Thecharlady38 · 11/07/2020 23:39

They said that they didn’t want ‘anything’ brought into the Salon, but surely your clothes could do the same thing! I haven’t known of any other businesses that have demanded you wear masks that THEY have provided and not your own! I keep thinking is it edging into profiteering?

The same happened at my hairdresser but I was charged £2. 5 is a bit steep. I was surprised I couldn't wear my own but assume it's so They know they are clean maybe ?

NellMangel · 11/07/2020 23:42

I'd be annoyed, mostly cos the ppe wasnt fit for purpose. Sounds like it's a pointless way of getting a couple more ££ out of their customers.

Titsywoo · 11/07/2020 23:45

I was charged £5 for PPE and the extra time they have to spend cleaning everything between each customer. Since they've kept their prices the same (lots of places have increased them to cover money lost) I'm not too bothered.

Thecharlady38 · 11/07/2020 23:47

That was my thought too. I found myself thinking if it was to raise some money that they’ve lost out on lately, you’d far rather they were honest about it and said something like “we are adding a small amount onto your bill temporarily to help with PPE, and shop fittings like perspex barriers”. Although the only difference in the salon was one perspex panel between the washing chairs!

I would not be a happy bunny, I can get a face mask for 99p locally.

They be taking the piss, next time go somewhere else.

Icanflyhigh · 11/07/2020 23:52

I took my son (8yo) for a cut today and we were told at the door we needed to wear masks, no problem as I had some in my bag ready. We were asked to sanitise on entry which we did and were advised that PPE masks were available at 70p each if we didn't have our own.
No great shakes, and I don't think 70p is OTT for a mask, but £5 is quite extortionate.

Thecharlady38 · 11/07/2020 23:54

I agree Gingaaarghpussy. Whichever way I try and look at it, it seems illogical and cheeky! 😡

Also bear in mind that it takes them twice a as long per client because of all the washing and sanitisation etc,
They need disposable gowns and to wash towels and absolutely everything between clients.

WhattheFishappening · 12/07/2020 00:04

I keep thinking is it edging into profiteering
Maybe not profiteering but most definitely clawing back lost revenue.
I would prefer ‘We have had to increase our prices from £35 to £40 to help cover our increased costs and to help our business remain viable’ or something like that.
What is irritating is the knowledge that 1 mask and pair of gloves don’t cost £5.

Just put the overall price up a bit and include gloves/masks/disposable gowns/shields etc. in the service.

Gingaaarghpussy · 12/07/2020 00:06

The thing is, if they are a good hairdresser, even before the dreaded lurgy, all scissors etc were thoroughly cleaned. So now they are capitalising on peoples ignorance. Granted the gowns were reusable but if the nhs can source throwaway gowns why cant others?

PickAChew · 12/07/2020 00:12

You're lucky you got your hair dried. A lot aren't.

BeansAndCheese123 · 12/07/2020 00:20

You do know that gloves are pretty pointless? All they do is move the germs around and give a false sense of security. They also provide a lovely warm, moist environment for other bacteria to grow. People rarely take them off properly and you just end up contaminating your hands with whats on the outside anyway Hmm

You can’t catch Covid through your hands, it’s from respiratory droplets going into your mucous membranes (eyes, nose and mouth).
You’re better off washing your hands regularly and thoroughly.

This stuff is so basic, but the general public seem oblivious to common sense since lockdown

I agree, I would far rather a bit more honesty, and add onto prices, we would all understand that. And by the way, there wasn’t a pair of gloves in the bag, only 1 mask!

Any germs on the gloves would ordinarily be on the skin so would be spread around either way.
Having said that, gloves stop people using hand san as they enter shops so the dirty gloves/ ‘hands’ move from shop to shop.

Using the sanitiser on gloveless hands when entering / Leaving each shop is best.

Thecharlady38 · 12/07/2020 09:52

BeansAndCheese123 - to be honest I haven’t personally been wearing mask and gloves in general, I only put them on to go into the salon as the rules asked you to. You’re right about the common sense aspect - the whole situation has highlighted how many people appear to want a large guidebook to tell them what to do and how to do it. Can we all not just use our own noggins! Is that another thread?!

OP posts:
Thecharlady38 · 12/07/2020 09:54

WhattheFishappening - I actually started to wash my gloved hands when I was told that I couldn’t wear my own items at all! Baffling!

5£ is steep .. i just bought a pack of 50 masks from amaon for £5.60 .... and i buy gloves for £5 for a pack of 100 pairs...

Frazzled2207 · 12/07/2020 10:23

Our hairdresser wanted us to wear a mask but preferred us to bring our own. They are putting on an extra £2 charge but they are clear that is to pay for STAFF ppe- totally fine with that.

Nah It stays on surfaces and we touch them That is why countries have closed playgrounds. That's why we were constantly told not to touch our face. It is amazing how often we just do. Your facts wrong
