What benefits have you noticed on yourself from drinking lemon water?

I started drinking 1 big mug of hot lemon water every morning about a month ago and I can already see some improvements in/on my body.

Some are:

  • I feel and am more hydrated as it prompts me to keep drinking throughout the day
  • My digestive system has really improved
  • I feel more energised
  • My skin is so much clearer

I will definitely be sticking to this and was wondering if there's any more benefits to come with time?

Unfortunately I loved the habit but it seemed to form a sticky layer on my teeth and I worried about acid eroding enamel. Once a day maybe for me.

4sandie · 11/07/2020 12:20

Oh, I never even thought about that Confused might have to look into it now!!

Drink with a straw so it doesn’t affect your teeth as much.

None. I started this a few weeks ago and have noticed no benefit. But it makes my teeth sensitive.

skybluee · 11/07/2020 12:23

It's mad that something as simple as a mug of lemon water can prompt those kind of changes. Bet you're glad you started drinking it!

I drink very weak lemon water all day. I feel so much better for it, my skin is clear and no spots. When I drink plenty, I am much less likely to overeat. Win win.

Echo keeping an eye on your teeth.
I drink ginger in hot water and feel the benefits (I think!) on my joints and digestion.

Camomila · 11/07/2020 12:33

How much lemon do you all put in? I squeeze in half a lemon (and some sugar or honey) but I only have it occasionally for an upset tummy or sore throat.

4sandie · 11/07/2020 12:51

Thanks all, I will definitely invest in a good reusable straw after reading your replies. Now that it's been said on here, my teeth have been a little more sensitive than normally and I didn't know why. Makes sense Blush

@Camomila I squeeze half a lemon in my mug, sometimes a little less. Occasionally I put in some honey but I like it nice and sour Grin

I've been doing it for months now and haven't noticed any difference at all! I enjoy it though and like to think it's doing some sort of good so will keep doing it!

GalesThisMorning · 11/07/2020 12:57

Would you not get the same benefits just from drinking water? Or herbal tea? That way you wouldn't have to worry about your teeth

HelpMeh · 11/07/2020 13:01

How much lemon-less water were you drinking before? If you're drinking more overall I'd imagine it's the water rather than the lemon that is responsible for most of the benefits.

Hiccupiscal · 11/07/2020 13:10

Hiya op.
I have been doing this for absolutely years, probably about 10....Im not sure if I notice a difference any more, but its part of my daily routine now, and when I go a few days without, not very often, I do notice the difference.

As pp have pointed out, if this is a long term change for you - you MUST drink out of a straw, as it will ruin your teeth.

I have several stainless steel straws for this and is perfect, although they do get hot to begin with so you might need to wait for the water to cool.

Always start with a few fingers of cold water in the bottom of the cup, so the boiling water doesn't totally destroy the vitamins in the lemon.

I do 1/4 slices and squeeze as much as i can out and leave the rind floating.
Organic lemons are best as no nasty pesticides on the peel, but i must admit I'm not that fussy, but i do buy organic when I can.

Another thing I discovered after a few years was turmeric, few shakes of turmeric, which has huge and far reaching health benefits in your lemon water is delicious and gives it another little edge. I remember thinking it was going to be horrible when I first tried it, but its great -and even if you're not keen at first, stick with it.

My DS (6) also has lemon and turmeric water in the morning, but i put a 1/4 spoon of manuka honey in his to make it more palatable.
This may be good for you too, although I personally stopped because of calories.

Wishing you many happy lemon water years Grin

I have lemon green tea in the morning but if I have lemon water (which will always have more lemon in it ) my teeth get sensitive so I've stopped as its not doing my teeth any favours

I find intermittent fasting works better for me, drink herbal teas or water all day and dinner at night.

I also second ditching soda drinks, I had one can of coke a few weeks back and my face broke out into spots.

whiteroseredrose · 11/07/2020 13:22

My DGM had a glass of hot water with half a lemon squeezed into it every day and lived to 95. She used to bring one to me so I got in the habit. I now take a glass up to DD every morning to continue the ritual.

4sandie · 11/07/2020 13:41

@GalesThisMorning I'm not sure, I very well might get the same benefits but I have always been good with drinking enough water, now I just drink more if that makes sense and have always drank herbal teas even before starting with lemon water.

@HelpMeh as mentioned above, I use to drink a lot of water I'm just drinking more now. Might be just that to be honest!

I drink black tea, made in a pot, to which I add a slice of lemon. Or a stick of cinnamon.

One main advantage, is that I can't eat chocolate when I drink either of them.😁 The flavours don't mix.

ScrapThatThen · 11/07/2020 21:35

I think to get the most benefit from turmeric it needs to be taken with pepper and possibly fat/oil? I used make a turmeric latte with a dash of pepper.
