What happens next? Letters of administration

My Mum sadly died in April aged 60, it was a shock to us all and she had no will.

We have finally got the letters of administration through yesterday and a solicitor has dealt with that for us. Me and my brother are her only family really, baring a few sisters.

What happens next? This is completely new to me and I have no idea. She owns a house which I lived in with her with a small mortgage and she has a hire purchase car from BMW. The plan is to sell the house so we can split and I can have a fresh start after a true horrendous few months but I feel utterly overwhelmed.

Does anyone have experience in this? Please!

I don’t have any experience with having to dispose of property, sorry, but just wanted to say I’m sorry for your loss Flowers

I would think you would contact BMW confirming you’ve got the letter of administration and asking for figures to return the car (any outstanding payments) or balloon payments to keep it.

You should also now be able to start the process of selling by contacting estate agents and getting the ball rolling there with valuations and choosing one to act.

Are you ok settling up all other bank accounts etc?

Look for endowments and life insurance.

If you need help give citizens advice a ring. I've talked people through this before when I was volunteering at CA. Its a fairly common query.

You need to gather everything in. Some firms will ask for an official copy of the ad letter and some will not.

Nothing should be given out until any debts have been cleared.
Tax has been notified and you should have a tough idea of the estate.
Follow the laws of interstate once everything is cleared including the electric charges in the house being sold. You

Debts cleared before any layout is the rule.

Thank you all, we have a rough idea of what is owed as my Mum was self employed so we needed to sort most things out fairly quickly to ensure bills were paid. I will contact the solicitor on Monday as she was going to finalise BMW for us.

Natwest have been absolutely brilliant, so they shouldn’t be an issue. BMW have been horrendous, it has completely put me off renewing my lease car next year.

Also thank you for the link, I will give it a read!
