Itchy skin at night?

TazSyd · 11/07/2020 04:07

I have been getting really itchy skin at night. Legs, arms, back, face. It starts as soon as I relax, so lying on the sofa or in bed. It’s so bad tonight it’s woken me up. I went to the GP about a year ago and he just said to get some E45 anti itch cream. Just wondering if anyone else has had this and what it was / how you fixed it?

What soap do you use?
TazSyd · 11/07/2020 04:26

I use Pears soap in the shower.

How old ru OP?

I get this ... im 44 and am fairly sure it is symptom of peri menopause.

I read on one of these threads about taking an antihistamine before i go to sleep. So i bought some Benadryl and it really does help.

The itching was driving me bonkers.

Even my head was itchy.

I get this too, I'm assuming its a symptom of peri-menopause.

TazSyd · 11/07/2020 04:35

I’m 40. Not sure if I’m peri menopausal yet. I’ve had it fir a few years now.

Yes. I had that a few years ago in my early 40s. It was so bad it actually made me physically jump.
I second the antihistamines.

Cross post with you @IfOnlyOurEyesSawSouls

I was reading up on it and the article recommended phenergan, it’s an older anti histamine that relieves itching and helps you sleep. I’ll see if I can get some from the pharmacy.

I get this. Didnt realise it was a sign of period menopause :( I'm only 35 and its not the only symptom I have :(

TazSyd · 11/07/2020 05:29

It can be all sorts if things @TheFormerPorpentinaScamander

I’m going to try anti histamines first, if they don’t work I’ll go back to my gp and ask fir some blood tests.

I hope the anti histamine work. I'll have a word with my gp as I have most of the symptoms of peri menopause so I should get checked I guess.

I’m sorry op but I read the title and wanted to post.

.......shepherd’s delight.

I’m sorry, I know it doesn’t help.

TazSyd · 11/07/2020 22:43

I’ve bought some phenergan today. Skin hasn’t starting itching yet, so I’ll let you know how I get in. Thanks for your comments and sorry you all have the same problem but I’m also glad it isn’t just me.

Could I just add, my intense nighttime itchiness eventually made me get it checked out. It turned out to be a symptom of an Overactive Thyroid which I’ve now been diagnosed with. Some of the things that came up when I Googled it were pretty serious - Liver / Kidney issues, Diabetes, Thyroid, so that made me decide to go to GP. But of course it could be less serious things like Menopause, or allergies. I’m really glad I decided to check it out though - you never know. Hopefully it’s something & nothing for you TazSyd.

I use Pears soap in the shower.
Sorry for replying late. I use to have this. It was usually one of three things -
  • shower water too hot (makes skin really dry therefore itchy) add a little more cold
  • change in contents of my usual bath soap or body lotion (or I tried a new one my skin didn't like)
  • washing detergent or softener (use less or switch)

Hope this helps

TazSyd · 16/07/2020 11:27

@ohnoisaid2much

Thank you. The phenergan seems to have helped but I’d still like to get to the root of the problem. I thought pears soap would be ok as it’s for kids but I’ll look into others, maybe simple. Same with washing detergent - we get non biological but we can try using a bit less and turn the shower down a notch, it’s not very hot but it’s not going to hurt to have it a bit cooler.

I’m 40, so once GPs open properly again, I’ll go in for one of those plus 40 health checks and request tests fir everything mentioned above. Hope fully it’s something I’m using, rather than something medical.

I've got a feeling my skin used to itch when I was peri especially around my breast area

KaliforniaDreamz · 16/07/2020 11:55

Are your eyes itchy too? is it a crawling sensation?
Since lockdown i have had this and now have soolantra cream, i don't have rosacea as such but the bleharitis in eyes and itching and blotches (that only i can see so that didnt help my cause with the GP) on face is a reaction to our skin mites demodex. PM me if u like.

KaliforniaDreamz · 16/07/2020 11:56

FWIW i think i was using too much oil in my skin care and that combined with the changes in lifestyle, (being locked down and the anxiety around life in march) led to a change in my natural skin flora.
