Just wondered about your views regarding temperament ? Same as other labs ?

I’ve had several labs. Been involved with a lab rescue. Never heard of a silver one.

Bunnybigears · 10/07/2020 23:06

I've googled them, they look like a Weimaraner, I noticed it was an American website. Is a silver lab actually a lab?

Honeyroar · 10/07/2020 23:06

Just googled. It looks like a lab x wiemaraner.

Exactly, don’t be taken in by this rubbish re colour, it’s usually a cross.

Lardlizard · 10/07/2020 23:15

What I’ve read says it’s a recessive gene but it is 100percent a lab

I've got a ginger working cocker spaniel, but it's not actually an official colour. So is the colour a genetic abnormality could there be issues with the silver lab ? I think whilst my cocker has is kennel club registered it was badly bred and isn't a classic look. It's highly anxious and I've had a previous WC.

I suppose with labs, I've heard that brown ones have more hip problems due to (being even more likely ) to be overweight. I've only had black labs experience and all my parents have had 3. All have been stubborn, but once trained (at about 7) they've been well behaved and happy. A relative has brown labs and hers are all huge, but I don't think she walks them much and over feeds them. Very friendly and cheeky. Google tells me silver is registered as brown, so maybe similar?

Cherrysoup · 10/07/2020 23:21

I’m afraid that is untrue. There have been endless discussions about this on other sites, it’s a nonsense. I bet the price is obscene, there was a litter advertised early on lockdown, bonkers price, even before the puppy market exploded.

Some outcrosses are fab, like with dalmatians where they resolved the purine issue. However, the KC are still iffy about accepting the descendants. If the breeder somehow managed to register silver labs, it’s unlikely they specified silver, it’s not an acceptable colour. ‘Special’ colours go for stupid money even in normal times.

Whitegrenache · 10/07/2020 23:23

I have bred kc registration labradors and trust me there is No such thing as a silver lab

I also shoot and know lots of other gun dog breeders and never ever seen one

Black and yellow are the standard and they are lush so why would you need a silver one ?

Cherrysoup · 10/07/2020 23:25

What?! Chocolate labs have commonly been bred for colour (although people are now wary of people breeding for colour) so less scrupulous people (back yard breeders) were producing pups whose parents hadn’t had the relevant tests eg hip/elbow scores or rubbish scores yet people still used dogs with shit scores because....money.

NoSquirrels · 10/07/2020 23:31

Yellow, black, fox red, brown - but I’ve never heard of silver.

We have a Lab cross and in terms of temperament she’s food obsessed, great with kids and cats (but obsessed with squirrels & rabbits), gentle and pretty lazy really. Quite typical, I think?

Kpo58 · 10/07/2020 23:35

I highly doubt that the silver colour has come in without crossbreeding as none of the other descendant breeds of the St. John's Water dog come in that colour.

Zigzagzagzig · 11/07/2020 00:17

Having had labs all my life I would wholeheartedly recommend them and sing their praises as the best dog breed ever. But have never heard of a silver variant. Most likely x bred with a weimaraner with a more stocky, lab type build

Smallsteps88 · 11/07/2020 00:22

Having googled and seen photos those are most definitely crossed with Weimaraner. Face shape eyes, ears. It’s all there. I don’t care what anyone says about them being 100% lab. They aren’t.

AlCalavicci · 11/07/2020 00:34

I agree with PP they are def Weimaraner crosses , look at the colour of their eyes .

I would be fairly sure that the breeders are looking for the next trend in cross breads and are not necessarily looking to breed the healthiest dogs

I wholeheartedly agree. Much like chocolates and other ‘desirable’ colours, not to mention trendy breeds that command stupid prices but aren’t fit for function.

Honeyroar · 11/07/2020 09:57

Some real shitty comments about chocs on here. I hate the snobbiness of some lab owners/breeders. Sometimes the “desirable” shooting type labs look so lean and thin in the face they look like they’ve something else in them anyway- collie or golden retriever sort of faces. Labs do all kind of work, not just retrieving. They aren’t just for one purpose! They were fishing dogs before they were used for hunting. I’ve had all colours of labs and my choc was the most intelligent by far. She’d have made a fantastic assistance dog she could work out and remember how to do so much. One of them was shooting stock type (yellow) and was faster and more agile, great at dock diving. Another one (black) had been an epilepsy alert dog. He’s such a kind dog, but doesn’t show any interest in swimming and can’t get over a stile, let alone a fence. They are such different dogs. I actually think there needs to be different sections of the stud book, a bit like welsh ponies. Section As are the heavy type, section B the more sporty type.

NewCatMummy · 11/07/2020 10:04

I know someone with a silver lab- he’s huge and looks more like a Weimaraner. She paid a fortune for him.

Zaphodsotherhead · 11/07/2020 10:31

Surely, when you are looking for a dog, colour is the LAST thing that should be on your mind?

CooperLooper · 11/07/2020 10:34

@Zaphodsotherhead why? I've got a fox red lab and I bought him specifically because I wanted a ginger dog 🤷🏼‍♀️

Zaphodsotherhead · 11/07/2020 10:42

Because my dog owning list would mainly be concerned with things like size, temperament, intelligence, trainability. No good having a dog that's the right colour if it bites the children, chases all the other animals, is too big to manage easily, has rubbish hip scores, refuses to listen to basic commands and just tows you around the village on walks!

There's a huge variation in all these things, even among labs. I'd rather have a dog I could live with than one that looked pretty.

Lardlizard · 11/07/2020 23:02

That why I’m asking if anyone where has any actual experience with them, because I’d like to know if they do still have that lovely lab temperament

OP posts:
Honeyroar · 12/07/2020 00:02

I know. Is there not a Facebook group or something for these type of lab owners? Might be worth a look?

Pollypocket89 · 12/07/2020 00:10

They aren't Labs though so the temperament won't be comparable... Maybe ask someone with a Lab Weim mix?
(not being sarcastic if it sounds that way)

Lardlizard · 12/07/2020 08:29

That’s why I’m trying to ask someone that’s has experience of them !

OP posts:
Pollypocket89 · 12/07/2020 09:35

I know, I mean you're better off asking about that crossbreed specifically rather than buying into the silver lab rubbish, maybe get the title changed? Silver labs have been around for a long time, I heard of them at least 10 years ago. I'm sure there's a reason the mix didn't take off...
