Recovery time for knee surgery

Has anyone had their ACL repaired or any type of knee surgery? What was the downtime? How long before you were able to resume things like housework and taking care of children?

Asking because my husband is getting it done within the next 4 weeks, and we have a 5 year old and 6 month old and no family to help so I'll be doing everything

DD had an MPFL reconstruction nearly 2 years ago when she was almost 14. She was in a lot of pain for the first few weeks and had her leg ‘locked’ in a brace to prevent her knee from bending for 2 weeks. After that came off she started physio twice a week initially, and managed to get back to school on crutches doing half days after 5 weeks. She was still in a fair amount of pain at that point and didn’t have anything like full mobility so it was quite a struggle for her to get about.

She was able to stop using crutches after about 5 months (she preferred to use them at school to remind others to be careful of her) and was signed off by the physio just before last Christmas. It’s been a slow process, but it has improved her life enormously so was definitely worthwhile. Good luck!

2 weeks before I could look after DC and then it was another 2-4 weeks of very easy cooking/ stuff DC could cook with supervision. 6 weeks crutches. No driving until off crutches. Lots of physio 36 sessions, 2x a week at first. Was told one year before back to normal and I guess that's about right.
