Three teen boys and toilet smell

madametomato · 10/07/2020 10:03

OmG I jut CBT get rid of the smell.

Recently moved and now have more toilets but the main bathroom is high traffic at night and first thing.

I have scrubbed and scrubbed on hands and knees in the floor and plinth. I have put the strongest drain cleaner I can down (we have private drainage - the modern version o a septic tank). I emptied the bowl and left white vinegar in for a day. I’ve used ‘the pink stuff’ To clean the bowl and the seat and the hinges of the seat.

I out one of those blue tablets in the cistern

It still smells of male wee!

It's on the floor and down the sides of the bowl, I guarantee it.

Did it smell when you moved in? When do the boys take their turns to clean the loo?

BarbaraofSeville · 10/07/2020 10:14

You say you have more than one toilet. Is it possible to use one of the others yourself and leave them to it?

Honestly, in a house with teen boys who can't hit the bowl and either believe in the cleaning fairy or have nose blindness, that's what I would do, especially if you have an en suite in your bedroom. Just never go in there and if they don't clean it, that's their problem.

Because the problem is unlikely to go away, and life's too short for that amount of effort.

Then you just replace the floorboards and flooring when they all move out. Fairly cheap job unless the bathroom is huge and far less stress.

Fandanglethat · 10/07/2020 10:16

It will have soaked in to the floor and skirting. It's grim.

They need better aim or to sit when they wee.

Kaykay066 · 10/07/2020 10:20

I have 4 boys, one toilet and a boyfriend

I scrub floor with bleach or diluted Milton
Bicarbonate of soda and bleach or vinegar on seat window open but often catch A wiff it’s not v nice toilet is clean and flushed every time, doesn’t ‘look’ dirty or pee stained but you need to make sure your boys are cleaning seat etc if they make a mess

Rustyigloo · 10/07/2020 10:27

I know it might sound a bit random but have you tried cleaning products for dog/cat urine?
They are designed to break down the smell and discourage marking.

Obviously you want the teens to wee in the same place and your children aren't animals! but Im wondering if it would be more effective at breaking down the smell.

Legoandloldolls · 10/07/2020 10:28

I have three boys, onecwith ASD and one with dyspraxia. Wipe it over ( inc the outside and a good foot of flooring surrounding it) daily or get them.to do it on rota. Try a bleach spray as it has it's own stronger smell. I also invested in some cheap pet spray from Tesco for when the dog has a cheeky wee on the sofa.

Getting my dyspraxia son with sensory issues to clean the loo is fun. I cant ask his brother to clean his brothers wee either. So its lots of inforcing they wipe the seet after every use.

Zaphodsotherhead · 10/07/2020 10:34

Can you change the seat? If it's any kind of wood then wee may well have soaked in and round the closing mechanism, so taking the seat off and scrubbing all round the back, then replacing with a new seat can help (for a while).

But yes, it's in the floor and surrounds. Strip back, rub down and repainting can help. Ultimately though, they need to aim better (but good luck with persuading THEM of that fact!)

Fleamaker123 · 10/07/2020 10:34

3 males in this house Shock I use a highly perfumed spray, Aldi bathroom spray is good. But it needs doing every day. We have lino in the bathroom so luckily it doesn't soak through. But it's on the skirting board, up the wall... revolting really.

Mawbags · 10/07/2020 10:54

Flash bleach spray

I’m lucky, Only one of mine actually stands up, the others prefer sitting down. Honestly it’s revolting, the only way to deal with it is to get the cleaning up after themselves

wowfudge · 10/07/2020 11:54

I don't think you can use bleach with a septic tank. I'd get them to clean it, but it sounds as though it may be soaked into the floor and woodwork. If the toilet base isn't sealed round with silicone, it may be underneath there. Yuck.

caringcarer · 10/07/2020 11:55

It will be in wooden seat and or soaked under vynal into floorboards and joist. We bought a house that needed much work doing on it and got it quite cheaply. I am certain it was because of the strong pee smell. We had new joist and floor in bathroom, new toilet seat and vile smell completely gone. It is not expensive to replace floor and it is so worth it to eliminate vile pee odour.

mencken · 10/07/2020 12:22

way too many bacteria killers being chucked down.

this is what pedestal mats are for, you wash those. And some house-training too.

HopeClearwater · 10/07/2020 12:25

Tile the walls up to a certain height?

crimsonlake · 10/07/2020 12:48

I have 2 sons, grown up and left home, has never ever been a problem in our house. This is not a teen boy issue, it is sheer lack of care from them.

madametomato · 10/07/2020 12:53

Floor is lino and silicone sealed and toilet seat is plastic. We only moved the week before lockdown and it was fine then. Not going by start stripping woodwork or floor because I’d be doing it every three months! That way madness lies

You can use bleach ‘within reason’ with domestic sewage. Ho hum, I will keep trying. Lucky to have an en-suite they aren’t allowed in which is great but I had a bath in the main bathroom this morning and 🤮

MaryRaddy · 10/07/2020 12:56

If there's a shower in there then take a look at that. I had the same problem. Turned out not to be the toilet at all. It was what I can only describe as crystallised wee up the shower door.

eyeblob · 10/07/2020 17:44

I did read shaving foam gets rid of the smell but other than that pet urine products will help

wellerhugs5 · 10/07/2020 17:56

Pets @ Home do sprays to neutralise dog/cat pee odour. I bought some as I have smelly toilets due to boys (big and small) peeing EVERYWHERE.

It works.
Wish I could spray it on the boys.

IHateCoronavirus · 10/07/2020 17:59

Make the buggers sit!
My friend was having the same problem and she has converted to lot of them into sitters.

Four males in this house, DH, two DS (teens) and four year old DS and we don’t have a problem. Apparently it is better for the prostate too.

Either that of a Cheerio for them to aim at like you would with a toddler.

PlanDeRaccordement · 10/07/2020 18:02

Strange. Never had this problem. My sons are grown up and moved out, but when they were teens had no issue. Did you have this at the last place? Or is it just in this new house?

I also would not be putting bleach and vinegar into a septic tank. You will mess up the system.

Does the toilet have a macerator?

tenlittlecygnets · 10/07/2020 18:21

Teach your dc to clean up after them, dirty gits! You're spending far too much time on other people's wee. What effort are they putting into solving the problem?

backseatcookers · 10/07/2020 18:29

This! I am baffled that they are teens and not firstly being careful and secondly being asked to contribute to household cleaning, starting with their toilet.

Don't teach them that it's automatically woman's job / mother's job to solve problems like this or they will expect their future partners to clean up their mess.

Wallywobbles · 10/07/2020 18:48

DH- Boys should sit for pees at home and push down. Stand for public loos.

DH says every boy should know to clean inside and out, under the rim, the seat needs removing and soaking in washing powder regularly.

user1486131602 · 10/07/2020 18:50

Menthol shaving foam should be you’re new best friend!

Spray it everywhere, wipe it about.
Go clean somewhere else and let it sit for at least 15 mins
Wipe and rinse, clean and not smelly!

Amymone · 10/07/2020 18:54

Pet spray is the only thing that works a treat. Has enzymes that neutralise urine, which bleach etc won't do
