Holiday at home - what would you eat?

We have struggled the last few weeks to keep our spirits up and as our kids are young, couldn't find a COVID secure holiday that wouldn't essentially be "same shit different place".
Instead we are hiring a hot tub for the week and doing a holiday at home. I am thinking of jugs of drinks for the kids and us but what to eat?
Kids are picky so things like olives, salami etc won't be well recieved. Any other lunch ideas that are "holiday foods"? Will probably have a few bbqs too.

Oh yes, baguettes. With proper butter and fancy strawberry jam. Yum.

Tapas, antipasto, picky tea... That sort of thing. Takeaway at least once, a BBQ, a nice proper hearty salad.

Sausages and burgers on barbys will get eaten

YY to this, we often cook extra sausages to have for breakfast the next day. You could even have a BBQ breakfast or brunch. Or get a Kellogs variety pack or big box of a treaty cereal.

Weather should be good so lots of BBQs, stock the freezer with ice creams from the supermarket. Maybe something like an M&S dine in deal for you and DH to have a nice meal together one evening?

Surprised at all of the pizza replies

Why, it's a very popular food and also very quick and easy to do - just get your favourite supermarket version to stick in the oven. Very little washing up too, so perfect for the OP who wants to feel like she's on holiday at home for a few days.

So the main thing would be whatever food you like that's easy to prepare and clear up afterwards, so you can have a more relaxing time. You say the DC won't eat salami and olives, but there's nothing to stop you putting out a mixed buffet of things like this, plus whatever your DCs like, Babybels, ham, crisps, nice bread, whatever.

Will you also be having some trips out? Theme park, beach, NT place, whatever is accessible and open?

How about a pop up tent where the kids can play, eat their lunch etc? Sorry not a food idea as such. Have fun!

Thanks ladies. Love the ideas. We have it for a full week so I will be using lots of your ideas.
I don't think we will be going out much. Maybe for long walks in the mornings but one of the reasons we are staying home is that DH, no matter how much he tries to convince himself otherwise, is still nervous of the virus. So this was the best compromise. We looked at places like haven but the kids will be constantly asking to use the pool and the arcade etc so it would be hard work.

Yes I know how making a pizza works 🤣 @BarbaraofSeville. But supermarket pizza isn't something I've ever eaten on holiday. It would remind me of a cheap quick tea rather than a lovely holiday meal. Nothing "holiday" about it.

BarbaraofSeville · 10/07/2020 10:17

You're eating the wrong pizza. Some supermarket pizzas are delicious, and not particularly cheap.

youhave4substitutes · 10/07/2020 12:20

Seriously, I'm not. There is no supermarket pizza that matches the meals we eat on holiday.

Of course it's cheap. It's a supermarket pizza!

Graphista · 10/07/2020 12:23

Ristorante pizza is yum! I'm having one tonight

safariboot · 10/07/2020 12:32

Who wants to cook all holiday? A barbecue or two yes (weather permitting), but otherwise I'd be getting takeaways or fancy-ish ready meals, in lieu of eating out. Try and mix it up a bit, get different styles and look for better quality places.

safariboot · 10/07/2020 12:33

That said, if someone's up to doing it, a full English breakfast has always been a holiday thing for me Grin

Quartz2208 · 10/07/2020 12:38

We have made homemade pizzas for italian night (where the kids help with the dough and toppings). If you have a bbq a pizza stone makes a really authentic pizza like you are on holiday.

We have done a mexican night with chips and dips spicy rice and wraps

Last week we did Spanish night with patatas bravas (or just plain roast potatoes for the kids) mushroom croquettes (homemade) and then some more adventurous ones for the adults.

We then play music to suit the theme and eat in the garden!

youhave4substitutes · 10/07/2020 12:50

Oh @Graphista not the Dr Oetker ones? 🤢

Took me right back to my good old glitching days where I might've "bought" around 200 of those. Yuk

TerrifiedandWorried · 10/07/2020 12:56

May I suggest paper plates? You can get compostable ones and the bliss of not washing up made our last barbecue my favourite. We have ordered a load of food from frenchclick.com so we can pretend we are on holiday in France in our own garden. They even do merguez sausages and those yummy kebabs...
