Is frequent spit up in six month old a concern if he's putting on weight?

DS has been a bit sicky since he was about three months old. He has reflux which is managed, and is a happy little fellow who eats well and is back.to sleeping well.
However every few weeks he goes through a really sicky phase - spitting up milk multiple.times after each feed. It doesn't bother him at all, no temp and probably stresses me out more!

I've posted about this before but thought he would be growing out of it by now.
He weighed just under six pounds at birth and is now 18 pounds so no worries there.

I've mentioned it to the GP and a nurse at our clinic and neither seemed worried and said it still falls under normal possetting

I wondered if he was overeating or eating too quickly or something. It usually seems to come.up with a burp, sometimes just a little trickle that he doesn't seem.to.notice

As a FTM can't help being a bit worried

My 8 month old does this and is under HV/consultant and all sorts for other reasons and she's done it in front of them and they are not at all bothered. Been put down to the fact she is greedy and prob over full!

If he's happy and putting in weight then it's fine.

I wouldn't say it's necessarily a problem but could you keep a food diary and see if it happens after certain foods? My four month old had reflux but also an egg and dairy allergy, and once I did a diary it was clear what was making her vomit (I was breastfeeding so it was all about what I had eaten turning up in her milk)

It's really hard to fully treat reflux in babies that age though, despite cutting out the allergens and medicating for the reflux we only saw a full improvement at about 9 months when her stomach muscles got stronger from crawling. So it's most likely it's that and he'll grow out of it. My daughter was a horrific sleeper, all due to the reflux, but because she was putting on weight nobody discovered the allergies until I did my own diary. I'm sure he's fine but there is a tendency to dismiss concerns once their weight is on track but I believe she was essentially comfort feeding because of the discomfort from the reflux and that was the main reason her weight stayed up.

My ds did this until about 1yr old. It really concerned me and I kept saying to the doc "if an adult was throwing up multiple times a day for no clear reason you wouldn't just leave them". What fixed it for ds was changing his formula. He was on similac due to a dairy allergy, however similac still has cows milk in it, just broken down. Once he went to neocate lcp (an anti allergen formula) it stopped and he was so much happier. Keep pushing the docs if I were you.

Thank you all.

He's actually being investigated for CMPA (although they don't actually think he has it, but he has bad skin and reflux so trying to eliminate it) but we are waiting for the dairy free formula to come then have to try and wean him onto it, so maybe that will improve.
Nobody seems worried because it's not consistent, ie not all the time, but in little phases.

I'll keep a diary as it will be useful. I've been worrying I haven't been cleaning his toys enough etc, or that I'm not washing out his bottles properly so been extra extra careful but perhaps it's just one of those things.

I have a slightly older baby (eight months old today) who was similar to your boy at six months, however now we are really getting to grips with weaning and he's cutting back on his milk intake the spitting up has stopped.

Nearlyadoctor · 09/07/2020 13:23

Both my Ds and Dd had reflux, dd worse than Ds so much so she was hospitalised at 8 weeks. Dd was then treated and hers was managed moderately well.
DS who was 12 years older ( born 1993) when people including myself as a medic weren’t as aware of it was intermittently sick/ spat up until he was nearly 20 months old. It didn’t have any detrimental effect on him but meant you never picked him up just before you were about to go out to dinner etc Grin

BabyLlamaZen · 09/07/2020 16:02

Mine was the same and has dairy allergy but was a bitch to diagnose. Keep an eye on them. No harm in ringing health visitor.

BabyLlamaZen · 09/07/2020 16:04

Also have the bad skin issue! Sounds like what happened with us op. Also they are so sensitive are that age and diary takes a while to get out of their system.

Peterbishopssarcasticsmile · 09/07/2020 21:31

interesting @babyllamazen his seems worse around his cheeks and chin, the rest never clears but isn't anywhere near as red or inflamed.
We have some dairy free formula coming but I'm going to be really surprised if he takes it. He's used to a thickened formula for one, and being six months is pretty used to the taste so I think it's going to be a struggle :-/

Mine was like it and tbf still is at 19. If he gobbles/has too much junk/not enough sleep/too much fizzy he still pukes. I knew it wasn't an allergy just his bodies way of saying I've had enough. He gained weight well as a baby and no one was concerned despite it being projectile.

AnnaNimmity · 09/07/2020 21:46

some of mine had really bad reflux (and food allergies) and still put on weight. So it could be a concern.

Mine were breastfed and I had to cut out quite a few food groups (including dairy) and they were much better.
Tbh it was only age that made it improve

Peterbishopssarcasticsmile · 09/07/2020 23:43

The only allergy I think it can be is dairy/cow's milk
The doctors and dieticians don't think he has it because they think the symptoms would be more consistent
He also doesn't have some of the symptoms so it doesn't quite fit
He's being weaned at the moment but we havent had any dairy or allergens just veg and non allergen fruit

We are weaning on purees at the moment and he eats the food very quickly and clearly wants more, and then does a little sick up afterwards - is this normal?! I thought weaning would help a bit, but I wonder if its the speed of consumption and the fact that it's a new texture.
He's not chucking it all back up, and again, a little comes up with a burp. I'll speak to the GP again, but he does this with all foods so can't be an allergy there. I'm a little concerned he may have some kind of digestion issue but not GP or HV seems bothered.

I have a six month old who spits up a lot. He's on an allergy (dairy and soy free) formula and still brings it up. But he's much happier, tummy is relaxed, no more gas. He's just a chucker. He's putting on weight and eating purées. If he eats too much purée or too close to a bottle he'll bring up some of that too.
