Annual appraisal. Should I be open that I am looking for a new job,?

hi a bit of advice needed please
I am in a fairly senior role in my organisation and oversee a large department of circa 100 people

Ive worked here now 5 and a half years but in a variety of jobs- current role around 18months.

In feb I had started looking at what was out there in the job market and applied for a couple. Obv lockdown etc put a stop to this but recently one organisation contacted me to say recruitment is happening again. I have gone through a long arduous recruitment process and am now awaiting my results

Anyway my appraisal is coming up with my boss. Should I be open that I am looking for a new job oitwith the organisation.

Nothing majorly wrong with my job but I feel like I have lost my passion and drive for the company and want a change in direction...

Not sure what to do as obviously may not get this job and then whats the poing in having said anything. But id still probably continue to look for a new opportunity...help!

No, I wouldn't. If it falls through you will have burnt your bridges at your current job.

Blankiefan · 09/07/2020 07:58

No but you could indicate that you'd be open to a new challenge - something left field. Maybe there's a totally different part of the organisation you could work in; learn a new skill but keep your seniority. The discussion mightbopen opportunities you're not aware of.

The protections offered by length of service aren't to be sniffed at, right now. An internal move could be less risky

Totally keep looking externally and go for something that feels right.

No, never say anything about job hunting before.

Not unless you want to use it as leverage to achieve a better role or package at your current company instead of actually moving.

Ok thanks all. I understand the risks of leaving and going external lime you say longevity in current place not to be sniffed at!

Resounding no all round! Thanks for the advice!

No! Definitely not!
The only time I'd say is if I'd had an offer and was trying to obtain a salary increase.
Not the done thing! Hope you get the new job.

What blankie said.

I've always been totally upfront with bosses if I apply for a job. I think they appreciate the honesty. However, in the current financial climate which has potential redundancy repercussions I would be a little more careful.
