Lighthearted - overseas living/buying - where?

I’ve just spent an enjoyable evening sipping wine and googling places to live.

I’m not rolling in cash (unfortunately), actually have 100-150 thousand so have narrowed it down to:

Sri Lanka (small coastal villa, could let in season)
Yorkshire (could afford a house, not sure of letting potential)
Malaysia (Kota Kinabalu - like it there - hopefully easy to let, no idea)
Madagascar (6 bed beachfront villa, would have to run as a hotel)
Maybe Cambodia but not so keen on paedo/drugs issues

Where would you choose for this budget and why?

Greece or Italy- I want a little olive grove and an orchard of peaches/grapes/cherries/apricots etc

Then, I'd make olive oil soap, scented with rosemary, lavender, sage, lemon, etc

I have looked at Sri Lanka in the past as I am a regular visitor, but be aware that there is/was a 100% purchase tax for non-locals (plus all the back-handers).
This has made me stay a regular visitor!

FarquarKumquatsmama · 09/07/2020 07:11

@7ofNine sounds nice but do you actually know how to do that?

@FraughtwithGin 100% tax 😮 My dreams are ruined.

I know, I was pretty disappointed when I discovered this. Mind you, it was a few years ago, so perhaps the situation has changed. However, if you go on hotel websites in Sri Lanka and want to book, there are different prices for locals and non-locals.

LittleMissRedHat · 09/07/2020 07:54

Yorkshire is overseas? Well I never! Wink Grin

FraughtwithGin is right, and the situation is getting even worse. Sri Lanka is terrible for taxes and backhanders. You also have to have quite a large some of money coming into the country every month. Then there are the visa requirements and the backhanders required to let you stay... Not worth the hassle.

Thailand is good - excellent healthcare and relatively cheap property. I know a few people who have bought to retire out there (I’m an expat; hence knowing people with such plans!).

FarquarKumquatsmama · 09/07/2020 08:44

@LittleMissRedHat Yorkshire is overseas for me.
OK, strike SL and add Thailand. I saw a documentary once about affordable care for adults with dementia in Thailand...
Any African Or South American countries Worth looking at?

No- I will learn it all as I go along Grin

Thailand is lovely actually, out of the touristy areas and Bangkok (which is crazy busy and not at all restful for retirement).

Costa Rica perhaps? But I would worry about all these long haul flights! Not what we should be encouraging.

hennybeans · 09/07/2020 11:43

What about Belize? I've got a friend with a holiday home there who loves it.

hennybeans · 09/07/2020 11:56

Hmm, having looked at house prices, maybe Belize isn't a good suggestion after all.
