How do you get the stench of piss out of a carpet?

PicpoulPixie · 08/07/2020 13:34

Am not a pee troll, been here since the dawn of time but deleted my account in a huff and have only just re-registered.

A revolting bastard peed in our lift over the weekend and it reeks. The cleaners have been out to deal with it but its still pretty ripe in there - in the way only man-pee can stink. I'm pretty cross and very disgusted but I do need to deal with it. Because we live in the swanky penthouse the lift opens directly into our flat, so the smell drafts up the lift shaft. It's grim.

I've looked on amazon and am frankly boggled by the number of products available for pet wee which people have had varying levels of success with on human "accidents" (we think this was no accident, more someone protesting about being told to keep quiet) and hoped someone might have a magic answer. Please. I cannot live somewhere that smells like a urinal!

That is revolting. Especially as it’s making your home smell.

I’ve used a solution of biological washing powder and hot water on the affected area, blotted dry then sprinkled bicarbonate of soda to get rid of any lingering odour, the vacuumed up.

This was toddler pee and I could open a window to ventilate.

TheQueef · 08/07/2020 14:10

No cctv in the lift?
Hate pissy lifts, phoneboxes too if you are old enough.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 08/07/2020 14:11

Can you get out a specialist cleaner?

userxx · 08/07/2020 14:12

Zoflora

BeanbagMcTavish · 08/07/2020 14:13

Ahhhhh disgusting.

I would try Simple Solution spray (works well on cat piss) and saturate it.

Or Dr Beckmann Carpet Stain Remover is amazing. This would actually be my first choice, except that it doesn't come as a spray and therefore might be harder to apply (it's a big bottle with a brush type attachment).

Get a professional carpet cleaner.

TurqMelon · 08/07/2020 14:17

Who manages the block ? They need to just rip out the carpet and replace it

LadyOfTheImprovisedBath · 08/07/2020 14:17

Bicarbonate of soda good on carpets with wee in leave then hoovered up - one of kids had an accident then didn't say so it was left until the smell was obvious.

Also did pet wee spray - as we had that in case of cat accidents which have been rare.

White vinger and bicarbonate of soda are good for toilet cleaning and lingering smells in cat litter trays.

Clorox blood, faeces, urine. Works wonders, can buy on Amazon. www.amazon.co.uk/CLOROX-COMPANY-Clorox-Remover-Stains/dp/B00TUC2L0G/ref=mp_s_a_1_2?dchild=1&keywords=clorox&tag=mumsnetforu03-21&qid=1594214264&sr=8-2
Also a strong solution of white wine vinegar and flash floor.
You need to kill the bacteria that are there, that’s what is making the smell

FrankiesKnuckle · 08/07/2020 14:19

Second simple solution. Gets rid of vomit smell like a dream too.

wowfudge · 08/07/2020 14:20

Persil Small and Mighty used in a carpet cleaner or even a spray bottle. It's biological. Low tech way to use it: spray all over smelly area of carpet and allow to sink in. Blot using old towels and stamping on them to extract moisture. If it's dried up before being treated in any way it may take a few goes.

coconutcoconutcrack · 08/07/2020 14:34

Urine neutraliser- buy it from Amazon.

Spray it all over the carpet, liberally. Until the carpet is soaked and then leave to dryIts got its own distinctive smell but a hundred times better than the smell of stale urine imo

coconutcoconutcrack · 08/07/2020 14:36

Forgot to add I use this at home as ds isn't that reliable with the whole using the toilet thing. It does work to get rid of the smell of stale wee (and also vomit!).

Hardlyworking · 08/07/2020 14:39

You don't. Dog peed on my living room carpet last year. Tried everything including a professional steam clean. You could still smell it lingering on a warm day. Ended up pulling up and replacing with wooden flooring.

iusedtohavechickens · 08/07/2020 16:57

My foster child had an accident on a carpet and I used shake and vax and can't smell it anymore. However it was probably a small wee in conpareison to what you've had 😖

PlugUgly1980 · 08/07/2020 17:13

Only thing that shifted wee smell from our carpet was using a Vax Carpet Cleaner with Vax shampoo. No amount of scrubbing with other detergent would draw it out.

LynetteScavo · 08/07/2020 17:41

Detox works on children's wee, but I'm not sure that's string enough. You obviously live somewhere where this behaviour isn't expected if you have carpet in the lift!

spiderlight · 08/07/2020 18:02

Urine-Off spray for cats is the best thing we've found (had a leaky older dog).

BrandoraPaithwaite · 08/07/2020 18:08

I had a thread about similar when a child peed into my new sofa. What worked eventually was a solution of warm water and bio laundry liquid soaked into the area. Apparently the bio enzymes break up the piss acids that stink. Or something. Anyway it worked on the smell.
Then I had to use upholstery cleaner to get rid of the soap and water marks but then it was good as new.

ColdGreenTeaMug · 08/07/2020 18:10

we use diluted bleach because bleach neutralises urine.

Elieza · 08/07/2020 18:26

The problem with sorting the carpet isnt the carpet, it’s the underlay that’s underneath that holds the stink and that you can’t easily get to.

If you try the above solutions and it still smells lift the carpet and bin the underlay, or preferably get the maintenance company/factor/building manager to deal with it.

If it’s going to be an issue in future if the pisser is a neighbour rather than a one off visitor perhaps tiles on the floor would be more practical.

Pelleas · 08/07/2020 18:29

If this is a lift - i.e. small - I'd think about replacing the carpet and underlay. We had this issue with an elderly cat peeing in our small lobby - we replaced the carpet with an offcut that we got for a fiver.

cantarina · 08/07/2020 18:31

Another vote for bio laundry detergent. I used it for cat spray. Once dry I wiped down surfaces with surgical spirit.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 08/07/2020 18:38

@PicpoulPixie - I would second the recommendation of white vinegar - but it has to be proper vinegar. Apply it liberally - the lift will smell like a chippy, but that smell does dissipate quite quickly.

I’ve used it on cat wee on the carpets, when our elderly cat started peeing indoors, and it definitely worked.

PicpoulPixie · 08/07/2020 21:34

The management company had our cleaners in on Monday to clean it but the smell lingers, though lingers sounds too polite a word. We’ve left the lift off with the door open to air it but honestly it just honks.

I will try the bio washing powder, and we’ll have the cleaners back on Friday for their weekly clean so they’ll have another go but I fear that an adult man wee in a 5’ x 3’ lift is going to have soaked through to the underlay and fucked the whole thing.

I suppose the stair climbing is good for me #brightside
