Why are the letters a/e being changed for x

Motherofmonsters · 08/07/2020 10:19

Sorry if I'm being really silly but why are a/e being swapped out for X in words.

I've now seen;
Womxn
Latinx
Humxnity
Wxstern

Are they meant to be pronounced differently or is it just a change in the spelling?

Batshittery. Just ignore.

Ifailed · 08/07/2020 10:25

maybe it's someone with a faulty keyboard?

TeaAndStrumpets · 08/07/2020 10:27

Or someone who's lost control of their vowels? It's very odd, I agree.

Loveinatimeofcovid · 08/07/2020 10:28

W-ex-tern sounds like a postmodernist spin on the classic western film genre.

Hum-ex-anity sounds like the title of an 80s song with a synth drumbeat and ‘profound’ lyrics.

slipperywhensparticus · 08/07/2020 10:29

my daughter advocates the mx instead of ms Mrs mr etc but even she doesn't know how to pronounce it

FunTimes2020 · 08/07/2020 10:31

I've never seen this! Is it a social media thing?

NCsonoOuting · 08/07/2020 10:31

The x is used to denote non binary, it started with wanting to take the"man" out of "woman" I think. It's a political/campaigning type usage.

Not sure what wxstern would mean though, and google doesn't help on that one! Probably neither from east nor west I imagine.

JaJaDingDong · 08/07/2020 10:31

It's because Woman and Human contain the word man.

No idea about Latinx or Wxstern.

It's just weird though - don't succumb, ignore.

Spam88 · 08/07/2020 10:33

Latinx is non-binary (vs Latina or Latino).

Dinosforall · 08/07/2020 10:34

Latinx is different though, that is to save writing Latina/Latino every time

stickygotstuck · 08/07/2020 10:35
Hmm
EBearhug · 08/07/2020 10:35

Latinx is in place of Latino/Latina, which you hear a lot more about in the USA. (I work for a US company.)

I would far rather more forms had the option of using no title than Mr/Ms/Mrs/Miss/Mx/etc, but few do.

drspouse · 08/07/2020 10:37

Latinx was started by women of Latin origin fed up of not being referred to in their language (usually Spanish but also Portuguese).
So if you say "a group of Latin people" you say "Latinos" which is masculine.
Only if you are referring to an entirely female group can you say "Latinas", one male taints the group and 99 women plus one man is "Latinos".
So it was an attempt to not let men take over when referring to a group.
It's rather like saying "don't use 'he' to refer to an individual of unknown sex - don't say 'a doctor should wash his hands before seeing a patient', instead say 'a doctor should wash their hands...'"

TeaAndStrumpets · 08/07/2020 10:38

It's a bit silly (imo) but not worth getting x about.

drspouse · 08/07/2020 10:38

@Spam88 Latinx is not non-binary. It's used for singular and plural when you either a) don't know the sex or b) are fed up of all non-determinate or groups being referred to as male.

TeaAndStrumpets · 08/07/2020 10:41

Yes that makes sense for Latinas, thanks for that.

The womxn seems to be along the lines of forbidding the word woman, and this does get on my womxnly txts.

Motherofmonsters · 08/07/2020 10:41

Ah okay, I get the Latinx one then.

Not really sure on changing woman and humanity. Seems a bit odd.

This is where wxstern came from, not sure if it helps. Didn't post it to start with as it's a bit of a word salad

I have had an epiphany.....

My whole life has been ruined by being made to watch The Woodentops at a tender age.

TeaAndStrumpets · 08/07/2020 10:52

Not to mention Andy Pandy, it has caused a lifetime of angst.

EBearhug · 08/07/2020 11:01

It's mostly rubbish anyway, because you have to know what the original word was to be able to substitute for x, so it brings attention to it anyway - which maybe makes people think, which is better than it being an unnoticed default, but it leaves a lot of people feeling a bit confused and not sure what it means, and they just move on, leaving them slightly puzzled and no more enlightened.
