If you're one of those people who wake up full of energy, how do you do it? What's your secret?
I've had a good nights sleep, but I've no energy to get up and I swear every bone in my body aches.

Great thread, OP! Definitely watching with interest!
If you don’t mind @hamstersarse, please could I ask for a few more of your tips? With regards to cutting out refined carbs, but eating natural carbs in vegetables, do you eat things like lentils, chickpeas, beans etc. Also would you eat bananas? Do you have any breakfasts you would recommend? I think diet definitely affects me and have tried the low carb diet before, but I can’t keep it up. I am looking at cutting out the junk and processed foods, so would be interested to hear if you can gain sleep benefits from this while still eating some unprocessed foods that can be high in carbs. Thank you.

2. Sleep on your side, rather than on your back or front.

I' always Confused about advice like this. I have no control about my sleep position. I move a lot in my sleep and I'm sure many other people do as well.

It helps so much! It also works to help drown out DH's snoring

Exactly!!! Who knew something so simple would work!

@vanillandhoney has it sussed. Good sleep hygiene isn't one magic trick, it's lots of little things.

Having said that, if it's getting out of the bed in the morning that's your main problem then you could try just making that a habit. Force yourself to get up as soon as the alarm goes off and get straight in the shower to wake yourself up. Once it's habitual and automatic you won't even think about it.

Yy to good sleep hygiene. I also spent £90 on a pillow and oh my, the quality of my sleep has improved so so much. No cricked neck or tossing and turning all night.

Admittedly £90 on a pillow seemed extreme at the time!

Depends entirely on how well the DC have slept!

Also, not having the room too stuffy (headache) or too cold (sore throat). I also like to have a glass of water by the bed.

Cut out crap food, make sure your day has had some exercise and fresh air.
I never eat my main meal at night….it "sits" on my stomach and makes me feel sick.
Have a decent bed and mattress, the firmer the better.
Do have the window open at night, don't have the room too hot (even if the bed itself is warm and toasty!)
Bed earlier, plenty of sleep so not over-tired in the morning. However, being a "morning" person rather than a "night" one also helps, I can't work late into the night at all but I am full of energy in the morning, even at 6am.

So many tips. Where to start!
We always sleep with the window open, even in winter so I have a proper nightcap!
I try to be in bed 10-1030 as DS wakes latest by 6. Never set an alarm!
I have a decent quality medium-hard mattress, definitely not soft.
Sleep on side, occasionally on front. Have a triple chambered pillow so my head is in the right place which ever way I sleep.
Possibly have not been drinking enough water, shall watch that.
Have tried to clean up my diet this year. No biscuits, cakes only on birthdays. We don't eat processed foods. Eat main meal at lunch time and smaller meal in the evening.
Last caffeine at 4pm.
I did have vitamin levels checked last year. Iron was ok, very deficient in VitD so take a supplement for that and started taking a multivitamin everyday.
Do sport at least 4 times a week.
Alcohol, one bottle over 7-10 days and I only ever open a bottle on a Friday.
We usually eat whole grain bread. Although, that has changed since DH has been working from home. We've been eating more white bread (but less pasta!).

Window open all night with a good exercise class or run through the park before going to bed.

IlanaWexler · 08/07/2020 20:58

Last caffeine at 4pm.

I would move this earlier. Caffeine can stay in your system (& have a stimulant effect) for up to 12 hours. Especially if you're taking a hormonal contraceptive.
