Did you have a home computer in the 1980s?

We had a ZX81 which attached to the TV (I was also a child of the 80s): it could do programming and graphics. I quickly got better at using it than my parents, but it was not much good for word processing. It really helped me with maths.

Later we had an Amstrad PCW which was great for word processing, and programming (I loved using Logo to draw pictures), but not games. My mum didn't embrace the idea of using it to plan or draft a piece of writing - she would not type a word until she had it finalised on paper. It lasted a few years before it went wrong too often. I learned to type on it; my mum got me a book about how to touch type, and I got quite speedy with it. The manual for this computer was literally an inch thick (and on really thin paper), and written in a very longhand style - how things have changed!

Spectrum 48k. Was really envious of friends who had the Commodore 64. We couldn't afford it.

Commodore Vic 20.

The Betamax of home computers.

We had the zx spectrum, then the zx spectrum +2 (the one with the cassette tape) which my dbro helped design when he worked in timex in Dundee.

We then had a bbc acorn with an external 5" floppy disk which was an amazingly fast upgrade from cassettes.

paradyning · 07/07/2020 20:43

Acorn Electron. Then an Omega 500 (which I think meant a 500kByte memory. As you could upgrade to a meg!)

jillandhersprite · 07/07/2020 20:53

Amstrad CPC6124 seems to be in my head. We had the green monitor and my cousin had the colour - I was very jealous.
Somewhere I still have one of my IT GCSE courseworks printed out that I did on it...!

ThereIsIron · 07/07/2020 20:53

ZX81, then ZX Spectrum, Commodore 64, Commodore Amiga, and a Toshiba MSX (not all at the same time).

AsMuchUseAsAMarzipanDildo · 07/07/2020 20:53

No and I’m surprised to be the first poster to say that. First had a home computer in about 1999/2000... when I was off to university.

jillandhersprite · 07/07/2020 20:55

with a dot matrix printer on paper that had holes up both edges that you tore off!

BarbedBloom · 07/07/2020 20:57

Yep. My dad worked in that area so we always got the new technology quickly.

pussycatinboots · 07/07/2020 20:59

I had a spectrum. I have to admit I didn't want a computer and hardly used it - no patience to wait for the games to load and I much preferred a book!
Complete waste of money.

Photo attached for younger posters to laugh at! Grin

We had a Commodore 16 in 1985 ish, which must have been cheaper than the C64. You could do simple programming and load games on it with a cassette player. No screen - it plugged into the TV.

Colycola · 07/07/2020 21:03

We had a spectrum 48k and it came with a game called Hunchback which i was utterly shit at. And a horse racing game I think.

Other than that I don’t know why we had it. My parents couldn’t use it. No one could really work out what to do with it.

bettsbattenburg · 07/07/2020 21:04

We had a Commodore Pet, an Apple Lisa, a Cromemco, a BBC model A and B, a few IBMs and an Osborne and then one of the first Apple Macs - Dad was a computer journalist.

Autumnchill · 07/07/2020 21:05

BBCB and it's £600 on eBay 😲

This was the game! And the level I could never do. I think it was only level 2! Am no better at gaming now though.

Commodore 64 😀

Lonelycrab · 07/07/2020 21:10

Dragon32 for a bit
Amstrad 464 with the cassette player.
Then an Amiga which get like reaching heaven after those twoGrin

EwwSprouts · 07/07/2020 21:11

No. A scientific calculator was the height of technology. School had a room of computers but only those doing computing had access. It was microfiche still in university library to search for anything.

Kittywampus · 07/07/2020 21:12

We had a c64, it must have been late 80s I guess. I used to play dizzy games on it and also loved to write simple programmes. Oh how I wish I had spent more time doing that as I would probably be earning £££ as a computer programmer!

Gingaaarghpussy · 07/07/2020 21:16

We had a zx81, everyone usually rambles about the spectrum so it's nice to know I'm not alone. We had a bbc bignold, it was modified from a bbc b by adding a floppy disc drive.

marypoppinsreturns · 07/07/2020 21:20

We had an atari 800XL. 1986 I think. 15 mins to load a cassette game or you could get cartridges you slotted in for some which were instant, though don't think the games were as good quality.

Rockbird · 07/07/2020 21:32

ZX Spectrum, Commodore 64, Amiga, then some horrid PC thing with orange dotty writing that my brother passed on to me. Then I went over to Mac and have stayed there since.

Loved the C64 though, we had so much fun with that.
