Are epilators really that painful?

I'm eyeing up an epilator in the sales. I've always wanted to try one. Obviously don't believe they are pain free but some of the reviews said "made them cry", "used once and straight back in the box", that it was "like sticking a red hot knife in your leg"!

Do you use one? How painful are they?

I reckon I have a pretty high pain threshold, and can suck most things up (broken ankles, flesh wounds down to the bone, I'm really not a wuss), but I managed to use my epilator three times before giving it away forever to a friend to do her boyfriend's back (poor man!). Made my eyes water, and hurt more each time I tried!

I've had a brazilian wax, and the lady complimented me on my high pain threshold Grin
...but i can't epilate my own bikini line, hurts too much.
Legs are no problem.

I've also managed to rip off a bit of undercarriage skin in the epilator tweezers while trying Envy

I find legs by far the most painful place to do!

Underarms I don’t feel at all. But I have been doing it for twenty years almost....

My advice is get your legs waxed once then use it on the regrowth

I got an epilator in the jan sales. I'd say my leg hair is the middle-of-the-road in terms of thickness. Not fine, but certainly not coarse. I don't find using it on my legs painful in the slightest.

I tried it on my armpit and it really, really hurt. I had to abandon it. But then those hairs are coarse. So I reckon the pain level has a lot has to do with how thick the hair is.

I can cope with my legs, but I do get the plucked chicken look and have to plan to wear trousers the following day. Underarms - first time was grim, after that it was fine.

What I did find was that it didn't get all the hairs, so I needed to do it weekly. If it got too painful, I'd just shave again and then epilate a few days later - not all the hairs had grown so you were not pulling them all out at once (also helps with the chicken leg thing). You've reminded me to have another go!

I have fair skin and fair hair, so no chance of a Lumea for me Sad

It does hurt but after the first few times it gets better. Take a couple of paracetamol an hour before and don’t do It during your period.
