What could I do with a coffee sack?

Pic attached. It's quite big (foot for scale) and reasonably solid. It came with my coffee beans as packing (instead of those foam packing peanuts or crumpled brown paper). I could just throw it away, but it seems a bit of a waste, plus it's quite heavy and we pay by weight for our refuse collection.

I've never had a time when I thought "I wish I had a burlap sack now", but at the same time it seems like it ought to be useful somehow.

Get another one and let your (or somebody else's) kids have a race?!

UnfinishedSymphon · 07/07/2020 13:37

Aren't you supposed to store the coffee beans in it?

UnfinishedSymphon · 07/07/2020 13:38

Or cut a hole in the other end, add a belt et voila - you have a dress Grin

ArriettyJones · 07/07/2020 13:38

Upholster some dull kitchen stools.

LoisLittsLover · 07/07/2020 13:38

Could you use it as a gift bag at Christmas?

catinb0oots · 07/07/2020 13:41

Store potatoes in it

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 07/07/2020 13:49

I agree with you that it would be an awful waste to just throw it away. It is useful for something or another, to you or to somebody else.

You could always try putting it on eBay - 'authentic rustic used coffee-bean sack, attractive for display or upcycling project' - you wouldn't make a fortune, but somebody might give you a few quid for it. Maybe as a wall feature in an indie cafe or pub? Depending on how rough or smooth it is, could it be stuffed to make into a cushion/pillow - even for an animal? Cut the sealed end open and wear it/sell it as a funky designer Boho skirt!!!! At least it wouldn't then just end up in landfill.

Make it into a floor cushion or an outdoor cushion. Store all your carrier bags in it.
Does it smell of coffee? (I possibly wouldn't use it for food storage if so?).

DaffyDaffy · 07/07/2020 14:56

Fill it with compost and plant something in it? Potatoes maybe?

LadyOfTheCanyon · 07/07/2020 15:00

Staple a portion of it over an artist's board for wall art?

I drink a lot of coffee, but not 70kg, well maybe 70kg in a decade. Grin The coffee beans that were delivered are nicely packaged by the kilo in a foil bag with a special little vent thing to keep it the right amount of aired.

I've discovered that it's making me cough (I thought it was just coincidence when I first handled it). So that rules out any indoor usage including cushions and clothing, it's a bit rough for that anyway.

That might work. I don't know if it would hold moisture well enough though, it's quite loosely woven. It would look attractively rustic though.

If I had a greenhouse I would use it to line benches or seedling trays, but I don't particularly enjoy gardening (I do enjoy gardens, just not the labour of making them beautiful).

You could make a lovely dress or some reusable sanitary pads with it that's what I would do, not really chuck it out or put it on fb for free. Someone will take it (one of those pinterest types).

ItsSpittingEverybodyIn · 07/07/2020 15:59

I'm cringing at the thought of (assuming) hessian type material as sanitary pads!

MsEllany · 07/07/2020 15:59

@Moonshinemisses are you insane?! Reusable sanitary towels out of a burlap sack?! I can only assume you don’t know what they are.

Jeez. I’m shuddering just thinking of the chafage.

monkeyonthetable · 07/07/2020 16:07

I'd keep logs in it. Nice rustic sack by the fire with the rim rolled back a bit. If not, potatoes or other root veg.

Moonshinemisses · 07/07/2020 16:17

@MsEllany It was a joke, I wouldn't make a lovely dress out of either. I'd sling it in the bin.

MsEllany · 07/07/2020 16:57

Oh. Blush well, carry on then! Grin

Ostanovka · 07/07/2020 17:04

I've had one for about a decade, kept it thinking it would be useful for something but never got round to it! Blush

EatsShootsAndRuns · 07/07/2020 17:11

Just googled out of curiosity. homesteading.com/burlap-sack-uses/

Like the sound of the bulletin board, could use it in the kitchen. Smile

TorysSuckRevokeArticle50 · 07/07/2020 17:16

If you are crafty then you can wash it then flatten it out and use it as backing for a rag or latch hook rug.

You can also use it to make bags, they work out really nice.

Alternatively sell it on eBay, they sell well, check out the prices.

I think exfoliation is the word you are looking for. Wink

Fanjo scrubbing burlap sanitary towels are something Gwyneth Paltrow would probably sell for $$$$$$.
