How to stop a reccuring dream?

I have been having a very vivid reccuring dream for about 4 years. To anyone else it would seem like quite an innocuous dream, but it leaves me feeling dazed and upset the next day.

How do I stop the dream?

Is your subconscious trying to tell you something? Depends on the dream. In the past I’ve had recurring dreams of being late for school, or sitting in class. At the time I was thinking of starting a degree, once I got started with the study the dreams stopped. Maybe there is something you need to do to make the dreams stop.

I would say that it would appear my subconcious is trying to tell me something yes. But it could try being a bit more obvious because I still haven't worked it out yet, 4 years later!

What was the dream? I’m guessing you’ve looked online for dream analysis clues?

My dream is a house dream. In my dream I move into a new house. The house is usually weird in some way (layout, decor), sometimes dangerous (dangerous stairs or electrics, eratic neighbours) or the previous owners have left all their belongings which I don't notice until after I've moved in. I feel really uneasy in the new house, and I really want to go back to my old house. The sadness I feel about the move makes me really upset, and I can't shake this feeling when I wake up.

On googling it would appear a house represents you as a person. So I can only think that I'm not happy about something to do with me or my life? And I want to go back. But what? The only stressful thing in my life currently are things I can't change anyway...kids, family (not DH).

I have that recurring dream!
I think maybe I have it when I feel insecure or worried.

Have you told friends about the dream?

If you give it another outlet it might stop at night.

Another thought is that I used to have recurring dreams as a child. I had bad asthma and apparently lots of asthmatics experience vivid dreams/hallucinations etc. at night. Since my asthma has improved I don't get the unwanted sleep things nearly so much. Are you asthmatic?

It's just a guess. Have you thought about moving house and never done anything about it as it's a daunting prospect, but would really like to move ?
It could be something as simple as this. Since it's maybe never going to happen but staying in your thoughts you dream negatively about it ?

I use to have a dream about houses but they were old and creepy. It was never the same house but the bathroom was always in a state and in every house the bath was filled about a quarter and had hair in it. I would walk into a bed room and the bed was very high and had an indentation as if someone had just been sitting there. Then I would hear a dog barking from the wardrobe. I’d go to the wardrobe, open it and nothing there the barking stopped. After that I would feel the presence of someone else in the room and the overwhelming need to get out. This dream went on for years but stopped when I met DH.

OP do you have any hobbies, things that can give you an outlet to express yourself. Kids take up a lot of time, especially when they are little. Maybe you need to do something for yourself. Something you did before the kids came along.

I have a very similar recurring dream! I recognise the house when I'm there. Some parts are quite old and, on one occasion, I went into the huge old living room and the floor was taken up and there was another room underneath.

Only once have I been outside and there was a pen in the huge garden with some goats in it. It took me ages to realise it was the same house.

I havent had it for a while but I get it a few times a year generally.

I found that recurring dreams would sometimes include awareness that this was a dream, or realisation that whatever was going on in the dream had happened before.
Rather than going fully lucid, it often became possible to alter slightly the course of the dream and continue the narrative but have a more favourable outcome.
It reduced the dismal and helpless feelings.

I can't think of a personal example, as I haven't had them for years, but friends in a group I'm in have described being able to turn and ask pursuers what they want, rather than be chased; or to find keys to locked doors, conjure up assistance, etc.
Perhaps you could summon cleaners, electricians, removal workers to make the house more pleasing to you; or find one perfect room in the house; or realise that your neighbours aren’t so dodgy after all, and have brought you a bottle of wine and a cake.
Or you might go fully lucid, say “it's this dream again” and magic everything better with a wave of your hand. Or fly away.

I used to have a recurring type of dream that was very disturbing when I was in my 20s. It involved finding or having to dispose of dead bodies in houses that I was in. I also had dreams about people being about to be murdered and me trying to get there to prevent it. At the time I was feeling rather nervous living in a ground floor flat with a creepy neighbour who walked around in the back garden outside my windows at night. I was also feeling unsettled and a bit insecure about the direction of my life. So it was a pretty obvious correlation of the dream to what was making me nervous and unsettled.

But I also have what I regard as frustration dreams where I am trying to get to places or find people and my trip is always going wrong. The bus goes too far or I can't find a taxi or other frustrations that prevent me from getting there. I have developed the capacity as Giggorata suggests of being able to be conscious that they are dreams and changing their course. I can start saying 'oh its that dream again' and say 'no I'm not going that way, I'm going to do something else'. I can say no I'm going to dream about something else or even wake myself up if its causing me distress. Perhaps you can see if you can divert the course of events.
