Aa someone with an 18 year old entering higher education and someone who works in the sector which institutions do you guys think are at risk?

I cant see this govt bailing these unis out, the anti higher education rhetoric by the govt makes that clear. Although 13 universities going bankrupt would be devasting for the sector.

Any thoughts?

What would happen to students half way through a course - presumably they would have to switch to another Uni ?

SerendipityJane · 06/07/2020 12:12

Maybe they could change their names and put "Air-" in front ? Could hoover up a bailout then .

Justanotherlurker · 06/07/2020 12:37

This is what happens when universities follow the capitalist mantra of perpetual growth. Education should never have become commoditised. Plenty of unis have borrowed money on the back of projected profits from international students, then started to build more student residences, thereby building equity through property - or so they thought.

They should have stuck to teaching, bit of a stretch to blame the tories for it though, all government shades as well as the uni's themselves share the blame.

I wasnt blaming the Tories for any bankruptcies.

I just think they wont bail them out, universities have been attacked as part of the so called culture war.

I'm due to enroll on a course in September at a university I strongly suspect will be on this list. I had no choice of where to go as I didn't want to relocate the DC's. Really wonder whether I should go through with it now Sad.
Even if I do what will happen if the university goes bust?

DGRossetti · 06/07/2020 13:36

You have to question the value of a qualification in economics from an institution that went bust ...

@Beebityboo - does the Open University offer a comparable course. Also Universities are establishing distance/on line learning as a strategy for delivering to current students. This could extend their offer and reach to students would otherwise not be able to consider that setting.

@DGRossetti - 😂😂😂

I think it's more likely the post 92 universities.

Loveinatimeofcovid · 06/07/2020 13:45

Surely it’s one of the universities that pump out worthless degrees. There are quite a few ‘universities’ in Britain that shouldn’t really exist.

KaptainKaveman · 06/07/2020 13:45

Is there a list of these ten universities? I haven't been able to find.one.

Beebityboo · 06/07/2020 13:45

The open University does the same degree but I know I wouldn't enjoy the modules as much. Might have no choice now depending on what happens Sad.

Beebityboo · 07/07/2020 10:35

That's ok Gin I'm just feeling really stressed about September and whether I'm making the right choice or not. I have a disability too so my choices are further limited by that.
