Lego Land-is it worth it

I’m thinking of taking DS to Lego Land as a treat late August/early September. We’ve never been and he is desperate to go (he is 7). We have annual passes for merlin so with one night in the legoland hotel it’s just over £200. It’s a 3 and a half hour drive from where we live and we usually go to Alton towers as we only live 20 minutes from there but he’s a bit old for CBeebies land and too young/scared of some of the bigger rides he’s tall enough for. It would only be my and DS who are going and don’t mind paying a bit more for a treat. I have heard it’s hell when it’s busy but with Covid and restricted numbers I’m hoping it’ll be quieter?

Thanks

We went a few years ago and it was well worth the money. No idea about restrictions atm but we went in summer and some rides had a queue but moved quickly and got to do everything we wanted

We live close by and used to take DD quite a lot when she was between 5-10 years old; I would say it’s well worth it. There’s lots to see and do: gentler rides as well as more “scary” ones for kids like gentle rollercoasters. Even when really busy I haven’t found it too bad and I suspect it’ll be even better at the moment with reduced numbers.
Personally I’d probably just stay in a cheaper hotel in Windsor but that’s not a bad price for the legoland hotel and If you want a treat go for it.

Depends what you compare it too.
If you can comfortably afford it yes.
Nice for the day. If your comparing it to theme parks elsewhere eg dlp, troverland, efteling, europa Park etc, no.

I remember taking my sons at about that age and on the way home they both said it had been The best day of their life.

He would love it, especially if he's into Lego.

Just consider whether you can afford it, for some £200 is huge, for others not.

Also the journey is long. Does he travel well, Car sick? You'd also probably have to set off very early to get the most of your day. Lego land is huge and we couldn't see everything in one day.

Time2change2 · 06/07/2020 09:13

It’s Really good for age 7. Queues are long as everywhere but as you say night he quieter

ExclamationPerfume · 06/07/2020 09:16

We didn't enjoy it at all. Massive queues everywhere. I don't get the attraction of it.

GetTheStartyParted · 06/07/2020 09:25

We spent 5 days in a budget hotel on the outskirts of London a few years ago, when youngest DS was 7. We wanted to make the most of our Merlin passes. So we visited Legoland, Thorpe Park, Chessington, London Eye, Madame Tussauds and so on.

There was a storm on the day we went to Legoland but it was probably the worst of the places we went, we just didn't enjoy it. We had a great day at Chessington. I have heard plenty of others like Legoland, not sure why we didn't.

ArfArfBarf · 06/07/2020 09:30

It can be really bad for queues. We are big Lego fans and have been to 5 or so Legoland parks around the world and it’s the only one I wouldn’t bother going back to.

BingeOnChocolate · 06/07/2020 09:33

Following as we are considering this too! I found a hotel about 4 miles away with 2 days of passes & kids eat free for £220 (2 adults and 6 year old)

tywysoges · 06/07/2020 09:33

We had annual passes when we lived nearby so went quite often - DD loves it, she’s 11 now and still talks about when we’re going back to legoland... it can be v v busy if it’s warm and sunny in the summer holidays (though maybe not with restrictions), inset days just before schools go back used to be the best/quietest. You can download the legoland app, it has a map of the park and queue times for the rides, quite helpful. I recommend going first to the busiest rides as queues are smaller when the park first opens - DD’s favourite was at the bottom of the hill, so we would start there and work out way up to the entrance. Food is terrible though! Grin

sausagepastapot · 06/07/2020 09:38

Massive queues the last two times we have been, won't bother going back.

edwinbear · 06/07/2020 10:21

It's a perfect age for Legoland, we went a few times when DC were in the 5-10 age range and they were great days out. I'd recommend getting the Q bot though, the middle of the range one is the best value. They make all the difference between spending all day in queues vs all day on rides.

Smallinthesmoke · 06/07/2020 10:26

Staying in the legoland hotel is a good shout. You get two full days in the park and early entry (to a limited no of rides), plus somewhere to chill out in the day if it is overwhelming. That takes the pain out of the queuing and means no need to fork out for a q-bot. We arrived by 1000 on Day 1 and left at 9 pm on Day 2, after enjoying the hotel evening entertainment. DD said best days of her life. Can't comment though on covid and if it spoils things eg no buffets.

SmileyClare · 06/07/2020 10:33

It might be worth trying to find out more about how restrictions are affecting the experience. The waiting times might be longer with number restrictions on rides, may be difficult to get into eating places? Are there any recent reviews you can look at?

Santasunhelpfulhelper · 06/07/2020 10:33

Staying in the hotel made it worth it for us.

waltzingparrot · 06/07/2020 10:43

We took our boys when they were 5 & 8. They were really into Lego but they thought it was just ok - never asked to go again. DH and I thought it was below meh and we paid something eye watering for something that tasted like cardboard.

spiderlight · 06/07/2020 12:40

We went when DS was 8 and he absolutely loved it. We stayed at a cheap guest house about 45 minutes away and got there very early in the morning, reserved a Q-Bot in advance and didn't queue for anything all day, even though it was busy.

ZeldaSmelda · 06/07/2020 16:43

Thanks everyone, I think I’ll go ahead and book it. I’ll check on their website what restrictions are in place but with it being a little while away hopefully things would have changed. Thanks again

Yes, stay in the Legoland Hotel, it's perfectly placed on the edge of the park and really adds to the experience.

Lonelycrab · 06/07/2020 16:59

No me and ds7 didn’t rate it that highly. All the rides had hour long queues when the rides themselves only last a couple of minutes. Lots of the food places were shut too but this was about a year ago.

Cost was £120 I think for the two of us. We stayed about 2-3 hours and felt like we’d had enough by then.

Much prefer paultons (pp world) as it was cheaper, bigger and just more fun all round.

formerbabe · 06/07/2020 17:10

I really loved legoland...I took my dc on an inset day so no queues

Floralnomad · 06/07/2020 17:16

If you are going to do it this year is the time as 7/8 is probably the upper age for Legoland . It may be worth checking the price for the hotel at Chessington and perhaps doing that one day and Legoland the next as you are coming a fair way in the first place .

Iwalkinmyclothing · 06/07/2020 17:17

Not at full price and the difference between Legoland hotel prices and other hotel prices was huge when we went- so we didn't stay at the Legoland hotel! We found it absolutely fine and even a nice break to drive off site to a different hotel for the evening.

The queues are ridiculous; if I went again I'd have to buy into the Q Bot nonsense I think, but I find that really irritating in itself, I really don't think there should be an option to pay not to queue, it leaves a really nasty taste in my mouth.

The dc have loved it whenever we went even with the queues (long) and wasps (many and persistent); I honestly didn't think it was much cop for what you pay, but I suppose it wasn't meant to appeal to me as much as to them.

Iwalkinmyclothing · 06/07/2020 17:18

"really" clearly being my go to word, there Blush

helia · 06/07/2020 17:21

We went in November and walked straight on to every ride. In the summer I was told you can queue for a couple of hours for some of them. I would absolutely recommend going in the winter - we had a lovely time and saw Father Christmas.

A colleague has also recommended going to the Legoland Hotel when the park is closed because it's cheaper and they put in activities for children.
