Home security....what have you all got?

We’ve been lax....but have had ‘someone’ staking us out overnight!

I’m looking at security options, wondering what you all do and what,if any, security features ? Amazon has a lot to choose from!

DP had a sporty racer thing last year and was pepper sprayed at the back gate/drive for it! He held on to his keys so they didn’t get it but it scared us enough to get rid of it

7 adults in our house....so 7 iPhones etc etc. 4 cars, all nothing special. But now I’m a bit spooked and realise we’ve been complacent recently

Gated private road, gated house within it and all the bells and whistles that go with it.

And a terrifying guard cat!

Ring doorbell with door sensors, side cameras and rear floodlight cameras. Reinforced glass in all doors and part of a very active neighbourhood watch

If you believe people are staking out, then I’d start doing things ASAP to make them aware you know that someone has been there

2155User · 05/07/2020 23:30

And I would definitely be investing in a ring doorbell type camera that covers the areas the dog is at/back gate

LilBlackLab · 06/07/2020 07:24

Yes. We have now padlocked the gate and taken a look through fresh eyes. Done some moving around outside

My ds thinks it’s someone after the puppy, my other ds thinks a peeping tom as I have a redundant dd sleeping on my sofa and she’s had the blind open some nights

I think we got complacent during lockdown so have hopefully scared off now

Nothing, but we live in a safe place

On paper and looking at all online data we live in an extremely safe area. Still didn't stop someone breaking in for dh's car whilst we were in bed.

I'd never live anywhere without decent security systems now.

im5050 · 06/07/2020 08:30

If you don’t use your back gate to enter your property put a extra bolt lower down on the gate not completely at the bottom but lower than the original bolt

Burglars can easily lean over a gate and get to the original bolt. But one further down the gate is a lot harder to get to.
We have ring door bell at the front and one at the back and we have dogs as well .
We also have an alarm and security flood lights & a couple of cctv signs . And a big double gates at the front of the house

Dog thefts are massive around here at the moment. I agree with your dh re: the puppy ☹️

Mydiary · 06/07/2020 12:16

Dog (Gobby, fast and big)

Cameras (Night vision that allow me to send a high pitched squeal to them or shout at them if needed)

Monitored alarm with panic setting

Manual gate (not sure that counts)

LilBlackLab · 07/07/2020 09:22

Thanks everyone. I have added the extra bolt and ordered a ring camera for now but looking into a full alarm as well

Also getting some more keys cut for the windows as we never used the locks before and have lost keys, down to just 2!

OP have you notified the police? I would ring the non emergency line. A few of our houses reported stake outs in the evening, and they put on some night patrols.

Bloomburger · 07/07/2020 09:36

Ring cameras on all sides of house (can be wired pretty easy as they use same wires as normal security lights), tong doorbell and an alarm system that you can set from phone when out or upstairs or anywhere really and panic button next to bed. Just ordered a new front door with a better locking system too.

We've had a few violent burglaries around our way lately and I've been burgled a few times so am a bit nervous at the best of times.

hellsbellsmelons · 07/07/2020 09:41

A dog and CCTV - 2 camera's out front and 2 at the back.
It was installed when people broke into ExP work van.
Luckily I'm a really light sleeper and heard them so they got away with very little.
It's a notorious area for this so we fitted CCTV.
The dog would probably lick them to death but would definitely bark a lot first!
