Anyone had a child whose had to have stuff removed from their ears?

Oh bollocks. This is pretty bad.

Just before lockdown, DT2 (3YO, is autistic, non verbal and visually impaired) started putting stuff in his ears - bits he chewed off toys, crumbs etc. Initially he would be quite good at letting us remove things but the last couple of times he got very distressed and wouldn’t let us near his ears or head. Just recently had a failed EEG because he wouldn’t let them near him.

I’ve been keeping a close eye on him and haven’t seen him do it for about month - I thought phew, that was an unpleasant phase, glad that’s over.

Then this afternoon he was pulling at his ear. We tried to look and he screamed. He fell asleep so we had a good look... there are loads of bits in both ears. We cannot get it out - he won’t let us. He’s not going to let a doctor do it either. I think they are going to have to sedate him to clean them out but we can’t keep doing that. I have honestly no idea what to do. He won’t wear ear defenders or anything that covers them.

Going to call the GP in the morning and email his paediatrician but I have no idea what they’ll do. He’s obviously gotten pretty good at doing it when we aren’t looking (his twin is also autistic so watching them both intensely at all times is impossible).

Has anyone had to go through this? What happened? He’s already scared enough of doctors and hospitals and I can’t explain things to him which makes it harder.
