Does anyone prefer visors to masks?

I haven't yet been in a situation where I've needed to wear either, but I am thinking that I'd almost prefer a visor rather than a mask. There might be less temptation to touch your face, and there is not the problem of your mouth and nose not being visible (which I find creepy). Do the visors also protect the wearer more than the masks do?

Masks are intended to protect other people from droplets containing the virus that would be spread by coughing, sneezing, talking, etc. That’s not what visors do. So no, a visor is not a replacement for a mask.

Stompythedinosaur · 05/07/2020 10:11

Visors and masks don't have the same function. A mask is the basic protection that effects the passage of fluid droplets in or out of your nose and mouth. Visors provide additional protection for the risk of droplets getting into your eyes.

I don't think anyone outside a care setting needs a visor tbh.

They aren't interchangeable. They serve different functions. In health care, you don't ever wear a visit without a mask. It's either mask or both.

Visors don’t replace masks, as HCPs we wear visors where there is a risk of splashing. They’re more for eye protection. We wear them AS WELL as masks, not instead.

If I saw someone in a shop for example wearing just a visor I’d feel obliged to have a little chat with them.

ikeairgin · 05/07/2020 10:34

I wear just a visor in a shop as I find the masks provided are useless with glasses. I work in that shop. Anyone with a problem / coming to talk to me can gtfo.

Sidge · 05/07/2020 12:51

@ikeairgin but what’s the point? You might as well wear nothing.

Scion286 · 05/07/2020 12:56

Wearing a visor on its own is absolutely pointless.

MaidenMotherCrone · 05/07/2020 13:06

@ikeairgin you might as well wear 2 pairs of glasses.

ikeairgin · 05/07/2020 13:08

Stops customers coughing in my face, that's the point

Frozenfrogs86 · 05/07/2020 13:11

Surely they would still work to stop droplets going into your mouth and vice versa? Obviously don’t work on air borne particles but neither do masks. Could someone explain why they aren’t suitable? I’m not being goady, but feel similar to the OP.

TiredMummyXYZ · 05/07/2020 13:11

This is an interesting article comparing the benefits of both. As a teacher with asthma - a visor would be preferable for me as kids could still see my face, it wouldn’t affect my breathing and it wouldn’t get soggy with prolonged use.

Nothingoriginalhere · 05/07/2020 13:19

As already said, a visor is to protect your eyes from splashes, a mask is also needed underneath.
If your glasses are steaming up with a mask you haven't got a good enough fit so wouldnt be getting protection from the mask either.

Nothingoriginalhere · 05/07/2020 13:20

And I wear a mask and visor all day, every day, and am sick of them but no choice ( nhs)

britnay · 05/07/2020 13:47

I wear a mask all day at work. If you put it on properly then it shouldn't steam up your glasses.

ikeairgin · 05/07/2020 14:06

I work in a supermarket - we have no choice over the crappy masks provided, they are cheap and insubstantial and yes , not a good fit due to their crappy-ness. I'm happy with my visor. If customers abided by the 2m social distancing rule, even a visor might be over-cautious - but they don't. It's a totally different setting to a health setting so the fact that people have to wear both in a health setting is neither here nor there as applicable to my workplace. HTH

Being a HCP, one would assume you were familiar with hidden disabilities, so if you tried to "have a little chat" with me (who can't wear a mask), you'd be walking away PDQ.
Sidge · 05/07/2020 15:36

@nextslideplease oh give it a rest. Of course I’m familiar with hidden disabilities.

When I say “have a word” I’d politely say something along the lines of just to let you know, you have more protection from coronavirus when wearing a mask than a visor.

If someone replied “I can’t wear a mask because of x, y or z” I’d say ok, take care. I’m not going to come up and hurl abuse at you. 🙄

nextslideplease · 05/07/2020 15:57

@Sidge don't bother approaching at all because what you are still doing is making assumptions and potentially making someone even more anxious. You may have been the 3rd or 4th person to approach them that day with the same comment, and it could be happening every day. Just mind your own business, educate yourself, stop making assumptions and stop being a busybody.

ikeairgin · 05/07/2020 16:07

This is what pisses me off about the whole covid issue.

We don't seem to be able to keep our beaks out of other people's business, from who's going into who's house - to what kind of PPE people are wearing.

The point is, masks are not mandatory (even on public transport it's a face covering - which in practice is usually a mask, but doesn't have to be)

People are making their own risk assesments - that's what we have been encouraged to do.

Don't "have a word" it's none of your business.

Stompythedinosaur · 06/07/2020 00:28

But a visor alone won't protect against Covid? It's obviously a personal decision, but I would hate for someone reading this thread to thing a visor is an alternative to a mask. It won't stop you catching it and it won't stop you passing it on.

Ginandsonic · 06/07/2020 00:32

The shop I work in I wear a visor because head office has said it's compulsory. No point in having a word with me, I'm just doing what I'm told so I can continue to out food on the table for my kids
