Disgusted with people increasing price of animals

I have been looking all over the internet for the availability of rescue dogs. We don't plan on getting one just yet but I always like to research ahead. I astounded at what people are charging for puppies. Up to £4,000. These are the same breeds that last year were less than half that, or even a quarter of that price.

I haven't been able to find many rescue dogs though. I have looked on local dogs home, preloved and a number of selling sites. I have only seen one on a selling site that was a realistic price with what seemed to be a genuine reason for rehoming.

Does anyone have any ideas on other sites I can look at? Would want to rehome a dig probably up to about 5 years old.

YANBU it is disgusting.

justanotherneighinparadise · 03/07/2020 20:37

I don’t understand why people are even paying. I would pat tops for a puppy a couple of hundred quid.

icedaisy · 03/07/2020 20:38

It's disgusting and a sure sign of a non reputable breeder.

I would sit tight a few weeks and they will all start rehoming them. Rescues are going to be bursting.

It is crazy - £2600 for a cockapoo. Loads of adverts for stud dogs available too. I didn't think it would be this hard to find a rescue dog.

For a mongrel??? Grin Grin That's bloody nuts.

Good idea. I am probably going to be working from home for a while longer for medical reasons so once that is confirmed I will think about the viability. When I go back to the workplace there will be very few days over the space of a few months when we are both out of the house for longer than a few hours so I now have time to put into having a dog. The only reason we haven't got one before is because we would have been at work too much. Another bonus of going part time.

Tbh the animals are less likely to be rehomed/dumped/used for bait or dog fighting etc at those prices. If I spend a couple thousand on something I’m sure as hell not about to give it away in a few months because I’ve got bored/changed my mind/decided it’s not actually a good fit for my family

icedaisy · 03/07/2020 20:54

I agree @PurpleButterflyAway but it's sadly true.

Lots of the rescues and rspca have out out statements about inflated prices and impulse buys. More money than sense perhaps, fear of long term commitment, I have no idea.

It wouldn't be me either but it's happening sadly.

Where abouts are you OP? Local rescue centres are worth registering with?

Honeyroar · 03/07/2020 20:59

The rescue I got one of mine from (lab specialist) posted a couple of days ago that they are already getting vibes that a lot more dogs are about to come into rescue as people go back to work. They’ve not rehomed much over lockdown as couldn’t do inspections etc. Things are starting to move again. So if you can hang on a bit I’m sure you’d find a rescue.

I'm in the south west. We have a couple of places but there isn't much there.

That's good to know. Thank you.

6 years ago our pedigree puppy from a very good breeder was £900. I thought that was a lot then, but now the same breed is thousands, and not necessarily from a reputable breeder. There should be a cap on how much they cost.

TimeWastingButFun · 03/07/2020 21:07

BTW it's worth researching specific breed rescue organisations. When my mum was looking for a particular breed after her beloved dog died, the breed rescue I found online put us in touch with someone looking to rehome one, now the dog has the life of royalty and my mum is over the moon, and the owners didn't want a penny even though we tried to pay (obviously they did thorough checks).

rosy71 · 03/07/2020 21:07

I have noticed this. We were considering getting a puppy this summer or next & had been researching before the pandemic. Puppies seem to cost about £2000 now whereas before the same breed was around £5/600.

Oldraver · 03/07/2020 21:09

I'm looking for a kitten/cat. People are wanting £300+ for a moggie

RippleEffects · 03/07/2020 21:16

There are two families near me who both got lock down puppies for their DC. One for two one for each teen, the other a little hound. The hound has become a barker. Dad works nights mum days DC in wrap around care. They'll be working again soon, I think dad's just gone back. The two teen girls started going out three times a day. Then two. Then one, if a friend called. I've not seen them go by at all this week. Puppies not so cute now/ novelty worn off.

Our 11 year old bitch cavalier king Charles spaniel is getting on in years and last summer we'd thought about getting a second dog this Easter to settle in with the family over the nicer weather months. Prices have gone mad. We had talked about whether to get a pup as i work from home but other than my first dog, mine have been rescues too.

I think sadly come Christmas the kennels will all be full to overflowing. A mix of work and financial pressures. I also think that the supply demand thing might mean some people have tried to raise some cash by mating their pets and will end up with unwanted pups when peoples pots start to run dry.

ItsSpittingEverybodyIn · 06/07/2020 12:25

Just had a look, people around here are asking 1200-1400 for a Jack Russell pup. They are usually around 3-400, surely if this is allowed to continue, and people actually pay it, then more and more animals will be used and mistreated? Our old jrt accidentally fathered the farm dogs puppies, and she had 8, so these people will be making around 8k a litter? Absolutely shocking, something needs to be done ASAP.

Pelleas · 06/07/2020 12:30

I have been looking in a 'see what's out there' way since we lost our beloved old fella about a month ago.

What's shocked me is the number of older dogs being advertised for 'rehoming' at £1500 plus. I can't escape the thought that people are cashing in on the family pet - it's awful.

rookiemere · 06/07/2020 12:34

Well a vain hope is that if someone can fork out £3k + which is what goldendoodle puppies are going for these days ( yes well aware before anyone points it out that this is in fact a mongrel) then they should have enough money to pay for doggy day care and walkers.

But it usually seems that the amount paid initially is inversely related to the amount set aside for vets bills and day care if needed,

ChavvySexPond · 06/07/2020 12:38

Selling animals is disgusting. Go through a rescue.

You don't have to take the poor broken down creatures who were used by breeders as kitten and puppy making machines but you don't have to give your money to animal abusers either.

get your cute kitten and puppy through a rescue

Or take in one of the recently rejected ones who are still young.

Abusing female cats and dogs for profit is wrong and should be shunned.

ToddlerBumpBorderCollie · 06/07/2020 12:44

Supply and demand? Lots of irresponsible buyers wanting a dog without thinking the implications through but like houses/holidays/anything if demand outstrips supply the price goes up. Isn’t that just how life works here?

FizzFan · 06/07/2020 12:46

The prices of puppies is awful. I have recently been looking at a fb page called small dog rescue that rescues stray dogs from Romania and brings them here. Also I have a friend who adopted 2 labradors from Irish Retriever Rescue who brings them here from Ireland

Oh that’s so sad

LillianBland · 06/07/2020 12:48

Just wait a few more weeks, OP. You’ll get plenty of older pups in the rescue centres once the lockdown pups become less adorable and start ruining the furniture because the owners are returning to work, going shopping, going on holidays, etc and didn’t factor in the fact that the dog will need cared for.
