pick locks......Grin

OK, not entirely accurate. DH bought a lock picking set. Has been messing around with it for about an hour. Now given DS a turn. No success as yet.

Am I going to look back on today as a bad day and a sign of things to come?

What have you shown/taught your DCs that you later looked back on thought WTF did we do that for?

(Disclaimer...DH has never broken the law bar some weed in his 20s and has the most moral/greatest integrity of anyone I know. So I am pretty sure he is not going to be heading off breaking in to anyone's house.)

Not something we taught him, but my oldest saw someone giving the finger when he was about 3, and picked that up for a while. It was pretty hilarious and he knew it was naughty, so never did it Infront of other people.
I also find it hilarious when very young children swear. I can't help it, it just makes me laugh everytime.

Iminaglasscaseofemotion · 03/07/2020 20:39

I also used to roll my papas fags, I was probably about 5.

MyNameHasBeenTaken · 03/07/2020 20:59

My dad taught me to ride a motorbike at 3.
Not a kids one!
He also taught me panel work on cars.

I am now out of the stage where I regretted buying ds a saxophone.

Ds has taught dd (6 at the time) to mow the lawn. With a petrol mower.

I wish a hadn't taught dd to knit. My wool stash is ruined.

StoneCold316 · 03/07/2020 21:07

My grandad taught me how to shoot a gun when I was 5 years old. I have definitely not done the same with my dc

SpeedofaSloth · 03/07/2020 21:08

Useful skill Smile

DS and DH have both managed to pick the locks on the see-through padlock that came with the lock-picking set. And a small cash box.

I have failed at both. Hurumph.

My dad taught me to roll fags when I was little. I love the smell of tobacco as it reminds me of him but shockingly I've never smoked in my life.

He also taught me to shoot and ride a motorbike.

Feelinggoodtuesday · 03/07/2020 21:24

Accidentally taught 3 year old to say bloody hell. She said it aptly this evening to DH and he just knew it was my doing. I was ashamed.

I accidentally taught my son that pigeons are actually called “fucking pigeons” to the extent that he corrected his reception teacher when she just called them pigeons Blush

I grew up in a poor area of Pakistan, so I was taught/exposed to some ‘unusual’ things. I could size broken bricks by price by the age of five and make and deep fry veg somasos on my own when I was four, good old safety conscious parents! I was taught to roll cigs very young, came in very handy when I started smoking and couldn’t afford ready made.

I leaned to pick pockets from an English teacher aged 12. For Oliver but I learned the actual skill. Method acting daaahling.

Ethelswith · 03/07/2020 21:34

That sounds fab!

I loved it when DS went to a different summer playscheme and came back having learned to play both pool and poker

RyanBergarasTeeth · 03/07/2020 21:40

Oh my friend has lock picking sets and watched loads of YouTube channels and he learned some great skills. Hes not a master criminal but has a keen interest in houdini.

coconutcoconutcrack · 03/07/2020 21:43

I taught dd a selection of Mary had a little lamb/diarrhoea type rhymes after she drove me crazy repeating my uncle billy over and over again.
And then promptly banned her from teaching her brother or cousins any of them.

Bargebill19 · 03/07/2020 21:53

I learnt to break into a car when very young - as was friends with the children of the local garage. Came in useful when dad left the keys in the locked car and the dog was inside early on a Sunday morning whilst doing the paper run. (Very early 1970s)
We both got told off by mum when we returned home.
Never used those skills since.

CarelessSquid07A · 03/07/2020 22:14

It's a useful skill. Grin

I taught myself at about 12 when Mum went through a phase of locking us out every week.

That reminds me.

I used to play snap and simple card games with baby ds.

He learned to count. Seven was always seben for some reason.

And he always started at 2...3 . 4...
Never 1

Anyway, nursery were doing some counting.
Some kids got to 3. A few knew up to 5.
One little girl could do 10. Teacher was impressed.

She asked if anybody knew what was after 10?

The Jack and then the lady. Oops.
