If you had an absolute cart horse of a baby, which clothing brands worked for you?

I am having a nightmare with 6mo DD. I thought her older sisters were chunky at this stage but she's built like a silverback gorilla and everything is tight on her Grin She's the same height as her twin brother, who is 25th centile for weight. She is top centile - 99.6th, to give you some comparison.

Height-wise, they are just coming into 6-9m clothes, but they're too tight around the abdomen for poor DD so I'm having to put her in 12-18m clothes to give her enough breathing room. But... She started crawling a couple of weeks ago and is getting incredibly frustrated with the trouser situation (and I am forever rolling up her sleeves). Vests the right depth are about 3" too long for her...

The best fit so far is Jojo, though it's pricey. I can't get her into most supermarket brands I've tried (Tesco, Sainsbury's, ASDA, Morrisons). Are there any wide but not long sizings anywhere that are worth trying?

I was about to suggest some vest extenders. But then I realised they were for length, not width.
Sorry. That would make it worse.

Newdaynewname1 · 03/07/2020 18:31

Frugi is absolutely massive width wise, but not cheap

AngeloMysterioso · 03/07/2020 18:36

Blade & rose knitted leggings are mega stretchy

My eldest was well over the top line in the weight chart by about 6 months. He was very large anyway - born 9lb 11oz, was greedy with milk and just didn't think crawling was for him.

I just bought supermarket clothes in bigger sizes and sewed up the bottom of trousers etc as needed.

At 10 months he got up and walked and eventually fell from over the top of the chart down to about 95th centile which is roughly where he should have been based on birth weight. So being really massive is probably temporary.

Just remember to check the weight limits on everything - pushchairs/car seats etc.

My son also had a speech delay so having a non-verbal 2 year old that looked like a 4 year old was a bit of a challenge at times. There were sometimes dirty looks from other parents when he acted like a 2 year old.

Darkestseasonofall · 03/07/2020 18:38

I've always found Next clothes to be wide and suitable for chubby babies.

bashcrashfall · 03/07/2020 18:38

In terms of brands, I think we mostly did Sainsburys and Next.

difficulttod · 03/07/2020 18:39

I was going to say Asda, they've always fitted my DS who was in size 3-4 at 1.5. But he is tall as well as chunky. H&M do larger vests which again worked for DS's tummy and they didn't seem too long to me.
Would leggings be easier to roll up her legs?

ShouldWeChangeTheBulb · 03/07/2020 18:41

Trousers made for cloth nappies tend to have extra room in the waist.

LivingDeadGirlUK · 03/07/2020 18:43

As pp said frugi vests are really wide, but expensive if not in the sale/second hand.

Blondiecub0109 · 03/07/2020 18:49

H&M conscious is recommended for cloth Nappies -so bulkier - might be worth a go?

Already mentioned up thread but we’ve found next generous

Si1ver · 03/07/2020 18:51

Frugi for sure, they do great sales and you might be able to pick up second hand too as they keep really well.

HoneysuckIejasmine · 03/07/2020 19:10

Frugi. Massive. My DD (4) wears 6-12 month trousers as shorts. (I removed the cuffs)

ThatsNotMySheep · 03/07/2020 19:14

Opposite problem for preemie DS who even at 5 yo is a wee tiny thing but M&S is still somewhere we need to avoid as the sizes are huge. Tu at Sainsbury’s also generous with the sizes.

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 03/07/2020 19:16

I think we need a photo of the two of them together, please. Love a brick shithouse baby (I had one) Grin

How about this hunk o' chunk? 7 months old and her arms are bigger than mine Grin

Frugi sounds like it might be the way to go then. I buy everything for the kids on eBay anyway so hopefully I can grab a bargain. I'll pick up some of the recommended H&M first in case that works (DS can always make use if not) I've found NEXT too narrow for Miss Chunky Chops Blush

Unfortunately I'm on android so photos won't work, otherwise I'd be more than happy to share their cute little faces Grin

We have a very varied gene pool, ranging from my 5ft 2, tiny framed grandad to DH's 6ft 7 international rugby player uncle. So far, we have had a very tall lanky one (who started life almost as chunky as DD3), an incredibly dainty tiny one, and now what seems to be two fairly average sized babies, one who's built like a twig and the other who's almost as deep in the chest as her father Blush Hopefully she grows out of that at some point or we won't hear the end of it in her teen years Grin

Also had a cart horse 😂 always found next to be on the larger size

Spanneroo · 03/07/2020 20:14

@RoLaren what an adorable photo! It's the little hand dimples where the knuckles should be that always get me. Gosh, you could eat them!

FrugiFan · 03/07/2020 20:15

The frugi sale will be on soon. There is a lot of stuff on ebay as well. It's great quality and holds its value, so if you buy it 50% off you could probably get most of your money back by selling it on ebay afterwards. All the stuff in their baby range is "cut for cloth" meaning is suitable for cloth nappies and therefore wider.

GrumpyHoonMain · 03/07/2020 20:19

I don’t have a carthorse - my DS has been 9th centile on weight and only 75th for height since 6 mo, but he is already wearing 9-12 months for length. I just don’t think baby clothes are designed very well. I recommend lots of rompers that cover the knees as they are the only thing that work for DS - he wears 12-18 month ones.

Newdaynewname1 · 03/07/2020 20:20

I somewhere have a photo of my (admittedly slim) 5 year old in a pair of 0-3 months frugi parsnip trousers ... he got wet at a playground, and we only had his little brother’s trousers to change him it. They did fit (as shorts)

BammBamm · 03/07/2020 20:21

M&S!

Spanneroo · 03/07/2020 22:13

Wow! Sounds like I could get some use out of any of DDs Frugi stuff once she's done with it Grin

OP posts:
Deelish75 · 03/07/2020 22:38

Next and Sainsbury’s. I found M&S a bit hit and miss.

Caesious · 03/07/2020 22:48

Maxomorra rib pants. They are lovely and roomy around the waist. It’s in european sizing and my very chunky 10 month old wears 74/80 with lots of room to grow.
