How much £ is reasonable?

My 17yo son is going to The Canaries for a week with his girlfriend's family, staying in a villa. They've said there's no costs other than paying for his flight however I want to transfer money to gf's mum to contribute to his food and drinks, and he'll have his own spending money too.

How much will be enough for 7 nights? I imagine they'll do a mix of eating in and out and they'll buy him beer too (which they know I'm fine with).

Thanks!

If this was me I wouldn't expect money for food and drink.

However, what would be nice is to send him with enough that's he's able to take them all out to dinner once or twice and maybe buy a round of two of drinks.

In your position, I'd transfer £100 for the 7 nights. In their position, I wouldn't take it!

I’d maybe send £200 for a week. I remember going on holiday with a boyfriends family at a similar age and my dad called his dad and asked how much money he’d like to be sent for meals etc and he said “oh don’t worry, we’ll sort it out when we’re there” I was painfully shy at that age so it left me feeling so awkward about what I should and shouldn’t offer to pay for while we were away.

So I’d definitely recommend sending money in advance so there’s no confusion over what your son should pay for

Thanks both. I'm sure they won't expect it but I'll send £100. He'll also have his monzo card loaded up. Cheers

£200.00

TattyByeTattyHead · 03/07/2020 13:45

£200 seems excessive to me when they've made it clear they don't want anything at all. £100 is a nice compromise along with him having his own spending money too

Troubledmummy3 · 03/07/2020 13:45

I was going to say £100 too 👍

Spied · 03/07/2020 13:48

£100.

If they eat out every meal for a week it will be at least £200 but if they eat in the villa and he eats a bit of what they eat it won't cost them much . I have taken dd friend away a few times ((16) and I'm happy to stump up for cooking but would expect her to contribute to meals out as they are expensive. However I always take her where food is included . Villas could go either way .
