What to do in Plymouth?

HistoricalAccount · 02/07/2020 12:06

DH is working there an couple of days a week and we are thinking of spending a bit of time together there. He usually stays in a hotel for key workers but we can get a place on Air BnB or stay in our camper.

Any suggestions of what to do there?

National marine aquarium, Hoe and Mayflower steps, venture up onto dartmoor, dartmoor zoo (on outskirts)

Ashhead24 · 02/07/2020 14:30

The Hoe is nice for a walk around and an ice cream, 5 minutes walk from the town centre. I think the national marine aquarium and Dartmoor Zoo are both open now, you will probably need to book a slot. Saltram House (national trust) gardens and parkland are open but you need to book, and Cotehele and Buckland Abbey are just outside of Plymouth and also bookable for walks around the garden. Dartmoor is 10 minutes drive from Plymouth as are a couple of beaches (Wembury, and slightly further Bigbury and Bantham). Struggling to think of much else.

if it wasn't lockdown I would suggest ferry over to Cawsand, Cremyl ferry to mount edgecombe, water taxi to royal William yard for restaurants, cafe's and pubs, walk round the Barbican and Hoe, theatre royal, bowling, Saltram, Wembury beach, and all of the PP suggestions. We have lots of nice restaurants and a reasonable shopping centre pre Covid but to be honest not sure how many are open at the moment.

Across the Tamar there's Anthony House NT place where they filmed part of Alice in Wonderland

Hope this will be of any help? www.britainsbestbreaks.tv/plymouth.asp

Plymbridge woods very pleasant and I think you can hire bikes - need to check though. If it wasn't for lockdown there would be loads

user1728393 · 02/07/2020 16:49

The hoe, the Plymouth gin distillery and there's a lighthouse you can look around too.

BikeRunSki · 02/07/2020 16:52

I was also going to suggest the aquarium and the Cawsand Ferry

My mum lives outside Plymouth ,we were there 2 weeks ago and had a lovely time.
We went up to Dartmoor, Bigbury beach, did a day at Looe and qwmt to Bantham beach.
We did crabbing off of the Barbican and my boys enjoyed watching teenagers jumping in the water. The Hoe is nice. Still lots to see and do despite lockdown, we found the toilets were all open. Definitely worth a visit

That’s fantastic! Thank you for suggestions! Sounds like there is plenty for us to do, despite lockdown. I can’t wait. Many thanks Smile

Dartmoor is literally on the doorstep. Twenty minutes and I’m on the edge of Dartmoor and I live in Plymouth. So much to see and do. There are several Facebook pages devoted to it.

Oblomov20 · 02/07/2020 19:57

There is so much to do in Plymouth. I grew up on Dartmoor and went into Plymouth clubbing!
The hoe.
Unfortunately I don't think mount edgcumbe or drakes island will be available to you due to Covid.

Snailsetssail · 02/07/2020 20:02

We will be on holiday in the area over the summer hopefully. Could we park at Cawsand and then get the ferry across and walk to The Hoe? My little one would love the boat trip.

MrFaceyRomford · 02/07/2020 20:48

Dartmoor and the villages around it.

StepAwayFromTheEcclesCakes · 03/07/2020 11:05

If the ferry is running then yes, however parking at Cawsand will be in a large pay and display car park. The bus journey is quite nice to Plymouth too.

Sanch1 · 03/07/2020 13:12

The cremyll ferry is now running over to mount edgecumbe, nice pub over there with carvery, if it opens this weekend, its has lots of outdoor space. Plus all the other stuff PP have mentioned. Just having to take your chance with Covid restrictions, I live and I dont even know for definite what is open and not. There are enough outdoor spaces though and you can get takeaway fish and chips and ice cream on the barbican.

Belleende · 03/07/2020 13:16

One of my favourite days out ever. Ferry across to Mount Edgecum, picnic there walk along the coast to Cawsand, pint or two there, bus back. I fell in love on that walk.

cultkid · 25/07/2020 16:09

Did you find any good places to eat I'm going to be in Plymouth Hoe tomorrow for 4 days

MadamFlutterby · 25/07/2020 16:10

There's a really lovely old fashioned sweet shop in The Barbican
