I’ve agreed to bleach and dye DD’s 12) hair pink for the summer - how??

Ok, the ends of her hair. Which is stupidly long at the moment, so there’s a good 3 inches she can play with and cut off before she starts school in September.

Full disclosure: that’s the type of thing my DPs would never have let me do in a million years, so I’m entirely happy for it to go ahead (& might even do the ends of my own at the same time) but I don’t want to cock it up.

What bleach should I use? We both have natural dark red hair, so I’m guessing we will need to lighten it first. And what colour? Brand?

What do I need to know, oh wise women of Mumsnet, that I will otherwise regret not asking in advance?

Thanks Grin

My advice would be don't, unless you have a friendly hairdresser in your phonebook who'll do it as a favour. Red hair is the most difficult to lighten barring asian hair and pink is one of the most difficult colours to achieve.

Watch every one of Brad Mondo's videos and then do something else instead! He's a hairdresser who comments on home dye videos, he has a YouTube and Facebook challenge. He'll show you what everyone does wrong!

If you’re only doing the ends, and therefore not risking damaging the whole length of her hair, I say go for it! This is what I used to use when I bleached my hair regularly as a teen: www.superdrug.com/Hair/Hair-Colourants/Bleach/Bblonde-Powder-Bleach-100g-Lightner/p/42315?gclid=EAIaIQobChMI6Pa6yZOt6gIVciB7Ch1-UQNnEAQYCCABEgIimvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds

Once you used that and lightener the hair, you can use pretty much any bright pink/pastel pink dye. Superdrug has loads .

Thanks all....going ahead, but with semi permanent, just on the ends. Other dcs keen to take part as well....this could get messy!

I second Brad Mondo! His videos have got me through lockdown Grin hides in shame

Pink is a bugger for fading quickly .

Superdrug do a range of semi permanent dyes called colour freedom, smell nice and are easy to use.
I mix half and half with a white conditioner and leave it for an hour.
I'm currently silver and purple.

I dyed ds's hair neon green last summer. I used the Manic Panic high lift bleach and their dye, and it worked out great. I topped up the colour for him a couple of times , and then he had it cut out the day before school

Littleyellowbowl · 02/07/2020 15:44

I know this sounds silly, but I've just dyed my Dd's (7) hair using tissue paper and it came out really bright with no damage. Shes loving her bright coloured hair!

Jerome Russell bblonde maximum blond, ive used it several times to go light blond from medium brown with no problems. can't help with the pink though

Fillybuster · 02/07/2020 23:43

Thanks again to everyone (& hello again @CMOTDibbler haven’t seen you for years! - funnily enough super conservative DS has said he fancies doing that this summer too!)

Quick lunchtime trip to Superdrug and we have own brand purple and turquoise, and a wella raspberry colour to play with. Was going to get the Jerome bleach but Dd decided she might try dying over her own colour first (to be fair, I had an absolute disaster trying to cover up some grey hairs with a supposedly semi permanent dye last year which left me with almost neon pink streaks that stayed until they grew out....so she has a point!), so I bought a spray in bleach to lighten the ends rather than dye them properly.

@Littleyellowbowl how does tissue dye work? Do you need blonde hair to begin with?

Anyway, roll on Sunday...

Its really easy, cut up an A4 sheet of tissue paper (we used The Works) into a bowl, add a little salt and boiling water. Stir and leave for 5 minutes. I then laid my DD down and put her hair in the bowl for 5 mins. Then rinse with cold water. Then dry Smile

She has medium brown hair and it came out well, ive also seen it done on dark hair. Ill try to attach a pic

@Littleyellowbowl that’s very cool, thank you. Might do that with dd2 who is feeling a bit sad about missing out on hair dye action.
