Earplug recommendations

I'm feeling really anxious about people going mad on Saturday when the pubs re-open but we can't afford to go out of town. Can anyone recommend really good earplugs so I can feel sure I'll actually be able to sleep?

I bought a big box of the Boots mint green ones recently and they work a treat.

GervaseFen · 01/07/2020 22:33

Thanks! I find it really difficult to block out the bass on outdoor music with foam ones (and I'm guessing pubs will be doing more of this if most of their customers are outside)

I've worn earplugs for many years & have tried quite a few brands. I've found the yellow form 'classic' earplugs were the best for me. You can get them in Boots, but I usually buy them in bulk from eBay - much cheaper.

Alicesweewonders · 01/07/2020 22:36

*Yellow Foam

pinkcattydude · 01/07/2020 23:07

We use beary quiet wax ones from Amazon really pleased with them

TattiePants · 01/07/2020 23:15

I’ve also worn earplugs nightly for 20+ years and only ever wear the yellow foam ones from Screwfix.

Houseplantmad · 01/07/2020 23:16

Quies are brilliant. Usually available at independent chemists.

TheNighthawk · 01/07/2020 23:34

I also use Quies - have used them nightly for many years (50 actually).
They are super and also comfortable. Available at most chemists and Amazon.

Chesterfuckingdrorrs · 01/07/2020 23:48

Howard leight laser lite ear plugs £3.65 for 20 pairs. They're all I use. I have a DH that snores like a bull and work shifts, I've tried a lot of earplugs over the years but these are by far the best and most comfortable

AngelzEye · 02/07/2020 02:04

I've been using 'Hush' silicon earplugs, 7 pairs usually less than £2 in Savers for years.
They're great, block low tones much better than foam, much more comfortable as you can shape them however you want - and you can kinda just wear them several times so they're very affordable too.

Link didn't show the specific product sorry but if anyone is interested, just search for them on Savers.

I have found that actively listening to something I like works better for me rather than blocking other noise out but I guess that depends on how loud the other noise it ( very busy road & trams and police station near by for me ) so I use this

(mile long link ! )

They are comfy and the battery last about 4 nights ( on for 8hrs at a time ) the volume doesn't go as loud as standard headphones but then I dont want it loud while going to sleep , just distracting .

AngeloMysterioso · 02/07/2020 03:14

Quies foam earplugs are the only thing that have stopped me slaughtering DH in his sleep. Fella snores like a bloody walrus.

wildone84 · 02/07/2020 03:24

Boots muffles wax earplugs.

I'm noise sensitive and have used many earplugs over the years. Those are the most effective ones I've found.

Kermitsbiggestfan · 02/07/2020 07:05

I use Mackies Dream girl ear plugs.
I've got tiny ears and these fit fine, others make my ears sore!

Branbleberries · 02/07/2020 09:31

Has anyone found a way to use bluetooth sleep earphones like the headband style one above, and have their phone come on with the alarm in the morning? I'm worried about missing my alarm if the earphones are still on/in. I'm not that keen on having bluetooth on all night, either - I'd rather it just reconnected at a certain time in the morning, but I haven't found an app that would do that! I'd also prefer the sound to also come out of the phone, in case the headphones have come off in the night, but that also seems difficult to find.

AlCalavicci · 02/07/2020 20:35

@Branbleberries

I have the ones I posted a link to ( the head band type )

I either listen to Audible or bbc sounds , both of which have a timer function on them so you can get your phone to turn the app off but the head phones stay turned on . iyswim
Unfortunately neither app has a turn on function so I can not wake up to the same program I went to sleep to .
The alarm on my phone ( Samsung A5 and J5 ) over rides the head phones so it doesn't matter if they have come off my head.

The only down side of them is I wake up looking even more gonk like than normal Confused

Branbleberries · 02/07/2020 22:36

The problem is that I don't want the phone to override the headphones, in case I am still wearing them! I need to be able to hear it in both cases, whether the headphones are still on or have come off.

for me it's not going to sleep that is the problem, but early morning noise, an hour or two before I need to get up - I want to block that noise, but still hear my alarm properly, and I haven't yet found a solution.

GervaseFen · 03/07/2020 23:48

I know what you mean about learning to listen @AlCalavicci and I would absolutely love to learn how not to care about noise but I have no idea how to do that - so in the meantime.those sleep headphones look amazing! Last time I used a white noise app was in a mountain dorm and I just had ordinary headphones which got quite uncomfortable.

An indegogo thing came up for me just recently that looks interesting:
en.amazfit.com/zenbuds.html

White noise sleep earbuds, with an in ear alarm. no music, though, but various sounds.

I am still not 100% sure about their explanation of no bluetooth needed, though; whether that is just for the sounds, or whether it's also for the alarm, and whether it still polls for bluetooth signals all night if it's not connected, which I don't really want next to my ears!

SnackBitch2020 · 04/07/2020 09:17

I use these ones, although you can buy them in smaller quantities. I use them to sleep, and find I can wear each pair 2–3 times. They are the best ones I've used:

200 Pairs of Howard Leight MAX Ear Plugs Superior Performance https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0026IR2SM/ref=cmswwrcpptai_vRdaFbSSCFMH6

JudasHisCarrot · 04/07/2020 09:22

I use the Boots own brand wax ones. Best ones I've found as you soften them and push them in - they block out almost all noise as they fit so well. Helps me (and consequently, him) when DP snores like a combine harvester Grin

AlCalavicci · 04/07/2020 09:51

@GervaseFen
I found that I learned to listen / not hear other sounds by picking something you really like .
So for me it's voices rather than music or white noise, if you have something like the audible app you can pick a book that has a easy rhythm to listen to with a soft spoken narrator. At the moment i am listening to Bill Bryson , Walk In The Woods ( a very good book imo )
Though I always listen to music during the day I don't at night as there are to many changes in tempo and volume.
But if you think you would prefer music on Spotify there are lots of 'go to sleep ' albums which to be honest i am not that keen on , however there is one called Peaceful Piano which I like to listen to while reading so that may suite you.

It's all about what is right for you.
