What to do with redundancy payment?

As a result of Covid-19 I’m being made redundant, the company I work for is closing my branch. Total settlement will be about £3500.

I have a credit card & store card I will pay off which is about £1500 between them.

My first instinct was to open a savings account, I don’t have one as I’ve been paying off debt for years, ‘thanks’ to the redundancy I can finally do so.

However, there’s a few things around the house which could do with being done. Usually my husband pays for any house stuff due to my lack of savings and although he’s never complained about it I do feel guilty that. We were having our hall, stairs & landing redone before lockdown and I was thinking I could pay to have new doors hung, it would really make the most of our narrow hallway.

I’ve discussed it with my husband and he’s just said it’s up to me. I like the idea of contributing to the house but also the idea of having a bit of money squirrelled away.

Open to opinions!

Should added, I have a new job lined up so don’t need the money to live on.

I would prioritise savings over house stuff and once you have a few months pay squirrelled away, save for new doors

Stick it in premium bonds OP. You can easily get the money out if you need it.
