Banana and curry!

Just wondering if anyone has sliced banana and peanuts on a curry? My wonderful grandmother would always serve her homemade curry with little bowls of peanuts and banana on the table for sprinkling on top. I’d forgotten all about it until my sister reminded me, but I’ve never seen anyone else serve it in this way.

We often have banana with our curry! It’s great. Instead of a mango chutney. Just the right level of sweetness.

My wonderful grandad always used to have sliced banana on his curry (even the mildest ones ) this has brought back wonderful memories

We had a blue dish with four sections, with banana, raisins, desiccated coconut and mango chutney. My dad worked in India in the 50s.

Back in the day a curry chip oftenused to come with raisins in it in a thick sauce. Now it’s usually the Chinese style curry sauce.

Yes! I'd forgotten, but in the 70s my mum always served home made beef curry with sliced banana, chopped apple and ready salted crisps. Yes, crisps Grin

We had a special metal dish with three sections for serving them, I think mum still has it, actually. This reminds me, I must ask her if she can remember the curry recipe. I know she used Sharwoods curry powder as i can remember the smell, it takes me right back. Mum's in her 80s now and I don't think she's made a curry for years.

In the 70s/80s my mum (white british) used to make curry using Bolst's curry powder, chopped onions, minced beef and raisins, and serve it with brown sauce and/or branstons pickle on the side. Weird. It was actually very lovely, but nothing like the curries that we eat now.

LadyQuellyn · 01/07/2020 19:36

My mother-in-law always does this with curries. There will be little bowls with peanuts, tomatoes, banana, yoghurt, chutney and cucumber. My husband rather likes it so we often do the same if we have those things available.
I had wondered where it came from so interesting to hear it is a 70s thing.

AdoptedBumpkin · 01/07/2020 19:37

Never heard of banana on curry!

Ragwort · 01/07/2020 19:39

Yes, I'd actually forgotten this but it was a real thing in the 70s & 80s and I love the taste of banana as a side dish to a curry.

Quackersandcheese3 · 01/07/2020 19:49

I’ve heard of it, don’t think it unusual but never tried it.

YouStupidBoy · 01/07/2020 19:52

My mum does sliced banana and desiccated coconut on the side and sultanas in the sauce. She's early - mid 70s.

MrsJemimaDuck · 01/07/2020 19:53

I’m not sure what’s wrong with me, but I think it sounds delicious.

KitKatKit · 01/07/2020 19:54

Is this a thing everyone except Asian people do?!

Cetado · 01/07/2020 19:56

Dh uses old black mushy bananas and or grated up apples when cooking his family's (Japanese) curry recipe. I was Hmm at first but it's nice, the paste gives it a sweetness and you can't tell it's got banana in when everything is cooked through

Redcrow · 01/07/2020 19:57

I always get Malayan (banana and pineapple) curry from the Indian takeaway and I've searched for a recipe for a banana curry and failed. Slicing it on top sounds like a good alternative

HavingAMoan · 01/07/2020 20:11

God no! I can’t stand anything sweet in curry and I hate coconut.

goose1964 · 01/07/2020 20:26

My mum did this in the 70s, it was a mild curry with raisins in and banana and dessicated coconut as toppings.

june2007 · 01/07/2020 20:31

May not be traditional but I like banna on my curry and rasinas in my curry. If you like it have it.

Luckingfovely · 01/07/2020 20:42

I love sliced banana with a hot Thai curry or soup, but have never had it with an Indian curry!

bilbodog · 01/07/2020 20:47

I make a sort of banana salsa to have with chicken curry - sliced bananas, sliced onion, cucumber, tomato, lemon juice and fresh coriander. Its very good but i dont know where i got the idea as my mum never made curry!

CherryPavlova · 01/07/2020 20:52

Occasionally a banana raita with a chicken curry.

Dugheed · 01/07/2020 20:54

My dad always made a mince curry and he always put sultanas in it. He said he learned it from the navy where the chef was Indian. I wonder if it was supposed to be for Western tastes.

Jemimapuddleduk · 01/07/2020 20:56

My granny used to make curries in the 80’s like this, sultanas in the curry then little bowls of boiled egg, peanuts, banana, Bombay mix, mango chutney and cucumber. It was absolutely gorgeous! Would love to have the recipe and re create it.

Genderwitched · 01/07/2020 22:13

Yes yes, my Mum (white British) did it in the 70s/80s. But she always fried the sliced banana and served it on the side of the curry. It was definitely a banana and not plantain. Lovely memory.

JumpingFrogs · 01/07/2020 22:29

We used to have sliced banana, chopped apple, chopped tomato, diced cucumber, diced raw onion and sultanas back in the seventies. Have recently reinstated this and my family love it! Will try desiccated coconut next time!
