Beach in Cumbia

I'm hoping the wisdom of MN can help me here...

I'm going to the Lakes at the end of July, but would quite like to combine with a day or 2 by the sea on the way home (midlands, south of Birmingham).

What is the coastal part of Cumbria like, and can anyone recommend somewhere to stay? I just want to see the sea/walk on the beach, but I can't see anywhere logical to stop on the way home that isn't miles out of the way. Any local info/wisdom appreciated!

If you want a huge sandy beach for walking and for dogs to run around on the what about Bolton-le-Sands. It’s not touristy at all and there’s not much there but the beach is huge and very quiet. Do keep an eye on the tide though, it’s very fast and watch out for quicksand. There are 2 pubs in the village, the Royal Hotel is definitely reopening but you will need to book. Not sure about the Packet Boat, but the fish & chip shop in the village is good.

Thanks everyone for your helpful hints and suggestions. I've decided to visit either Sandscale or Walney Island as a day trip from Windermere. We're going to spend the other 2 nights in Grasmere. Now all we need is the weather...

We sometimes visit seascale which I like for a day trip in winter but I wouldn’t say it has a nice seaside feel to it

We made it to the sea! We stopped in Ulverston for lunch and spent afternoon walking along the seafront on Walney Island. Just what I needed. Thanks for the great advice!

Helll @ReviewingTheSituation I could probably wave to you from my house right now! I can really recommend visiting Roan Head/Sandscale Haws on the way back this evening. In my opinion it's much more picturesque. You could also take the long scenic route back to your accommodation along 'the coast road' and stop off for an ice cream at Roy's van, very good value and the best ice cream while you take in the views.
Hope you've had a great day.

I'd be impressed if you could wave... we're back in the Midlands now! We went to the sea on our way up on Sunday. It was SO good to feel the sea air, hear the waves and enjoy the wide expanse of open space looking out to sea. And we had blue skies too, which was a bonus.
