Part time jobs for 16 yo

LittleOgres · 01/07/2020 13:44

My nearly 16yo son would love a part time job. I know he probably needs to be 16yo, but he is keen to see what would be available.
He has looked at supermarkets but not a single vacancy anywhere.
Due to some special needs (Aspergers) I don't think he could babysit or work in a cafe/restaurant (he hates touching food!). But otherwise he is a hard worker and very good chap.
Any suggestions?
I saw on another thread that so many people were saying they or their kids worked at 16/17 but as what??
Thanks.

I was going to recommend McDonalds, they have been an excellent employer for my DS during his late teens, really treat staff fairly, although I imagine that varies according to local management, I've been very impressed with them as an employer. Sorry that's no help for you.

When we were teens the local dairy would pay us to put yoghurts into boxes. It was easy and we got 20p per box. Is there something like that he could do?

Paper round? You can do it from 13. My daughter earned about £13 a week from that so fairly low paid though compared to some jobs.
Other non food stores - Sports Direct, etc?
Our local Maccies employs two people with a slight learning difficulty to sweep up, pick up litter, clean tables etc.

What does he enjoy doing? Does he have an interest in a longer term job he wants to have one day that he could gain some experience in?

At 16, I worked in a supermarket. But I also worked on a farm in the summers (hand pollinating maize, would you believe it, it was actually really an enjoyable job). It was typical student farm labour type work. I also had a job exercising someone's horses and mucking out at a livery.

Does he want to learn a trade? My dh is self-employed in sort of a traditional trade and he has occasionally hired 16 year olds to do things like basic paint jobs, or cleaning/packing products for shipment, or doing some welding for those who have the training.

My DS got a job doing washing up in a boarding house of a public school in our town. It was minimum wage and he wasn't madly keen but he applied to Sainsbury's after a year and has worked there PT ever since.

I am sure that the year washing up helped his application as some of his peers didn't even get an interview. He now gets paid £9.20 an hour!

Dd has been working Saturdays for a year, she’s 17 at Debenhams. Temporary contract ended due to corona, has now applied for loads of jobs and not hearing back from anything. I think its going to be difficult.

Papergirl1968 · 01/07/2020 15:42

Sorry, just realised my post could come across as slightly offensive.
I know Aspergers isn’t the same as having a mild learning difficulty. I should have said our local Maccies employs two people with special needs.

Lots of suggestions, thank you!
He loves horse riding, gets lessons, hadn’t even thought of the the stables, thank you.
He also loves McDs chips, but don’t think he could cope with tidying up other people’s food remains.
Thanks everyone!

Cleaning jobs on a evening. People often work alone on a evening. Maybe something like offices?.

Rubyandsaphire · 02/07/2020 18:02

My 16 year old has 2 jobs. He really struggled prior to 16.
A weekly paper round.
The second job was voluntary at first to try and get some experience and a reference for when he was 16. He was actually offered a paid job.
Both jobs have some flexibility in them so he could reduce hours /plan around busy academic times.

geogteach · 02/07/2020 19:08

Mine have had jobs in various sectors - pot wash in cafe, paper rounds and marking up papers for rounds, tutoring, refereeing football, supermarket worker.
For those with an interest in football training as a ref is great, in our experience lots of work and well paid.

cptartapp · 02/07/2020 19:19

My sons both referee in the local junior leagues. £25 an hour! On hold at the minute though.
Aside from that DS1 worked at JD sports. Vacancies advertise online but got taken on around Xmas and kept on. Late summer also a good time to look when students off to uni.
