"Ripen at home"... yeah, right!

Why does this always mean "This fruit will go straight from rock-hard to mouldy without achieving softness or sweetness at any point" ?

Yes, Aldi peaches I'm looking at you.

Ginfordinner · 01/07/2020 13:12

Yep. They are a con.

TheVanguardSix · 01/07/2020 13:19

Right?! Every single one of you! Waitrose, Tesco, Sainsbury's, M&S, Aldi... liars. And yet, summer after summer, I sidle on up to the fruit aisle with my frayed hope and debit card on the ready. I'm the fool who carries on half-believing that this time, the punnet of lies will actually ripen at home. Never happens.

reinacorriendo · 01/07/2020 13:20

I have found you bring them home, not ripe, day 2, not ripe, day 3 not ripe, day 4 hand goes through them rotten so at some point over night in day 3 they are probably perfect Grin honestly I can never get it right

LoseLooseLucy · 01/07/2020 13:20

Yep. Never known any to ripen.

TiddyTid · 01/07/2020 13:22

Same. Ripen to mould.

BrandyandBabycham · 01/07/2020 13:23

Struggling with an avocado from Aldi at the mo. It said refrigerate so it wouldn’t over ripen but bugger all was happening so I have put it in the fruit bowl. Rock hard! Think I’ll stick to “ Ripe & Ready”. I love avocado & it’s frustrating not being able to eat it.

HPLikecraft · 01/07/2020 13:24

Yep, I can never ripen anything at home.
Bananas are the worst. They stay green and go off green.

Zaphodsotherhead · 01/07/2020 15:20

I think there are special breeds of fruit sold in supermarkets, that have been designed to go from 'hand grenade' to 'bluey-green unidentifiable lump' without passing any intermediate stages.

And it's always the nice fruit. Never the bloody gooseberries.

StormyLovesOdd · 01/07/2020 15:27

I find if I put peaches or nectarines on my window ledge in my south facing kitchen (so long as it's sunny outside) for 1-2 days them move them to my lounge which is north facing and cooler they actually ripen. I only discovered this this year after years of my fruit going from hard to mouldy, it's been a revelation.

This doesn't work with bananas though.

TheSecondMrsAshwell · 01/07/2020 15:49

I bought a punnet of plums from Tesco. Ye gods!!!! They were so sour and hard. I should have stewed them for a crumble.

Never had a problem with banananahs though. Annoyingly, I have a curry recipe that calls for a very overripe brown banana and I never have any.
