Does anyone own an air conditioning unit please??

If so what do you have and do you recommend it?? I used to have one when ds was a baby many moons ago but it was massive and very heavy. Are there any newer types that are a reasonable size?? The one I had was the height of a washing machine and about 2/3 of the width. Are there any more dehumidifier size??

This thread is from a few years ago so some of the suggestions may be out of date, but we’ve recently updated our best air conditioner page with lots of great Mumsnetter-approved portable, compact AC units to help you beat the heat this summer! We hope it’s useful.

Iv bought a teeny one of those for dc room but the dog sleeps in my room so really want air con so it will affect the whole room as she is on the floor...

Our air con unit is as loud as you describe, I thought I couldn’t sleep with it on either but it’s amazing what a boiling hot bedroom can do!
We do tend to put it on before we go to bed though so that it cools the room rather than have it on whilst we are in bed - although needs must sometimes.

Wonderingwhyme · 31/07/2020 21:47

I had one years back and it was loud but could sleep with it? This one is ridiculous. It seems to rattle as well as sound like a jet. Trying to see if I can return but I’m just passed their 14 day thing Sad

Ours is loud if you are sat right next to it but as long as it's a few metres away it's ok? It's currently in my baby's room and she's sound asleep....

Wonderingwhyme · 01/08/2020 06:41

@PrayingandHoping I don’t get it! I got that one but the bigger one. I always have white noise so I not remotely sensitive to noise but it was another level! If you pushed down on the top it didn’t vibrate as much but you can’t put something heavy on top as the top is sloped so it falls off. Then the actual fan is like a jet engine. I’m very aware they are going to be loud but this is a different level. Even my kids who have to have white noise said it was too loud and that even they couldn’t sleep with it on.

Iv contacted appliances direct but I’m literally just over the 14 days to return so they probably won’t help.

The whole BTU business, I’m guessing the higher the number the louder it will be or is that nonsense? I don’t know what to do.

Mine is only a tiny bit louder than the fan it replaced and it actually works for us as it’s enough to block out the noise of the arse next door sat in his garden mouthing off all night about how he hates women and coloured people.

PrayingandHoping · 01/08/2020 07:30

I'd say mine is the same as a fan in highest setting.... it doesn't vibrate though. It's more whirring....

I wouldn't want it right next to me but it's fine across the room....

CourtneyLurve · 01/08/2020 07:41

They are noisy. I almost returned mine when I first bought it, but you really do get used to the noise.

It shouldn't rattle continuously, though (on start-up for a minute or two is normal). I'd send it back as faulty.

I have a Comfee - it's decent. Blows properly ice cold air. I switch it over to fan mode if I need something quieter.

Haha, yes, mine blocks out the neighbours, too. It's keeping me sane!
DominaShantotto · 01/08/2020 07:44

I tend to use the top of mine as a bedside table to be honest which gives you an idea of how tall it is.

lborgia · 01/08/2020 07:44

If it's too loud for sleep, normal chat etc., I'd say it's "not fit for purpose", and you should definitely get your money back.

If they really did dig in their heels, can you choose another?

Wonderingwhyme · 01/08/2020 10:16

As I said years ago I had one as it was loud, so I was perfectly prepared but this is a different level. I left it on for 2 hours and 2 hours later it was still as loud and had been left stationary for the 2 weeks since it was delivered.

I’m awaiting to see what they say. If they don’t let me return then yes I guess I will have to right it off and get another. @DominaShantotto which one do you have? @CourtneyLurve which model do you have please?

As iv said before I’m in rented so can’t be adding actual air con in the house otherwise I would!

This is my brand: www.comfee-uk.com/ Mine is the 9000 one. I paid WAY less, so they've obviously increased prices due to demand. The damaged box version is a good deal.

FraughtwithGin · 02/08/2020 13:26

The best aircon unit I have every come across was a Panasonic one, but it was built in and vented to the outside.
Not only did it cool, but it also de-humidified and there was a special "extra quiet" setting, so you could have it on overnight without noise.

Nat6999 · 02/08/2020 13:32

I've got the JML tiny one, it sits on my bedside table, size of a cd player, average size bedroom, leave it on all day full blast with the door closed, fill with water twice a day, keeps my room nice & cool & smoke free even though I vape.

DominaShantotto · 02/08/2020 14:08

www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B07MXR93T8/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o04_s00?psc=1&tag=mumsnetforu03-21&ie=UTF8 is the one we have (forget which window sealing kit we have to go with it) - it's about the height of a bedside table (I use it as such) and a little bit noisy but I find it works as white noise to drown out arsehole neighbour.

Be warned though they dispatch via Hermes - our first went "missing".

Wonderingwhyme · 02/08/2020 15:44

Thanks everyone. The one I found on amazon, the owner has sent me a video of it working and it is very quiet... so I’m probably going to get that one.

Does anyone know my rights with appliance direct? I am done day off their 14 day return thing.... I don’t want a replacement, I want a refund as i believe it is faulty with the noise and vibration as it sounds like something is loose inside.

OP posts:
TooManyDogsandChildren · 02/08/2020 16:57

Can you download a decibel meter app on your phone and test how noisy it actually is compared to what they say?

Wonderingwhyme · 02/08/2020 17:26

@TooManyDogsandChildren thank you I didn’t know that was a thing! So at one time it went up to 71, it’s advertised max 64. I have also videoed the noise as well....
