It's my mates birthday and I want to get him a nice present. He loves whiskey, probably more scotch and bourbon than irish. But I'm cluelessBlush. Anyone got any they'd recommend? Budget is sub 50 quid I guess. I might go more for something special.

Thanks!

Go for a single malt. For something really good, have a look at the distilleries ' websites for special gift boxes etc. I wouldn't just grab something "off the shelf" of a supermarket . Unless you have a good liquor shop nearby who specialise and can recommend something, if you have time, send off for it.

Hi I usually buy my dad who likes his whiskey one of the following Chivas Regal, Highland Park 12 year old, Dalwhinnie, Balvenie either the 12 or 14 year old. They range in price from £25.00 to £40.00 depending on where you buy. Hope this helps

Macallan Gold is great as is Bunnahabhain 12 yr old or older - neither are particularly peaty. They are my favourites in your price range

All good suggestions so far but the problem is that most drinkers favour one style. They will appreciate any bottle but might have preferred another.

Do you know any of his mates? If so contact them and find his preferred style, (ie Highland, Islay , speysid, or what he normally drinks.) Then you could get a better bottle than his usual, ie a 15 or 20 year old rather than 10 or 12.

VeniVidiWeeWee · 01/07/2020 01:28

PS for any other drinkers here I like Islay and their own label has won a gold medal. I doubt I could tell it from Laphroaig (sp?) when drinking.

I like this slightly peaty single malt from Campbeltown www.amazon.co.uk/Longrow-Peated-Malt-46-70cl/dp/B009P5Y6DS?tag=mumsnetforu03-21
Might get it a few quid cheaper elsewhere.
They do the whole process by hand at the springbank distillery where this is made which I think is unique.

Oban single malt 14 year maybe. I don’t know anything about whiskey but someone gave me this in a bar once and I liked it. I generally don’t like dark spirits.

VeniVidiWeeWee · 01/07/2020 01:46

I am a complete Muppet.

Aldi Islay has won the medal.

BigMamaFratelli · 01/07/2020 08:36

Good point about style Veni Unfortunately I don't know, but I could maybe find out somehow. Macallan does ring a bell though....

Very easy to buy whisky on amazon and get it delivered.

Yes the Aldi Glen Marnoch limited release single malt is very good indeed - we had a bottle at Christmas and were impressed - not peaty

ConnellWaldronsChain · 01/07/2020 12:33

Isle of Arran 12yo is DH's current favourite

Thinks its about £40

VeniVidiWeeWee · 01/07/2020 13:09

@mytholmroyd

Glen Marnoch is Aldi's whisky "brand". They sell from different regions- the Islay is very peaty.

My DH is a big whisky fan and I use the hard to find whisky website for really nice bottles. You can get some nice whisky or bourbon and not the average stuff in supermarkets.

When buying whisky beware that whisky drinkers are like dessert fiends. They all have their own preferences. For example, there's peaty, smooth and fruity whiskies.

For an all rounder I'd probably say try something like Woodford Reserve which is a nice bourbon. For whisky there are so many to choose from. Talisker and Oban are nice and come in different variations and most of the bottles are within your budget. Hope this helps.

Ah - ours was the Highland

DGRossetti · 01/07/2020 15:25

Maybe a collection of miniatures ?

Or something a bit exotic ? Some of the flavoured cask-aged whiskies can be divine. (I have a penchant for Glen Moray Chardonnay Cask aged single malt ...)

BigMamaFratelli · 01/07/2020 19:24

Thanks for the help Smile

We've gone for Woodford reserve from amazon as I definitely know he likes bourbon, and there was way to much room for error with the scotch
